Wiring Help...Feelin' stupid...

Greetings, all...
I've been all through these forums ( and half of the internet) prior to posting this. 30 years of playing, but only recently have started to nerd out. Attempting to replace the pickup on my lap steel. As unfancy as it gets, with a single pickup, volume and tone control. I ordered an Antiquity P-90.

Not sure what all I'm looking at. You have the braided covered wire, a second shorter wire soldered to that, and then 2 short black wires coming through a grommet. Can I assume that the wire inside the braided sleeve is the hot, the braided sleeve is the ground ( as is the short wire soldered to it)? What are the 2 shorties for?
I've worked with basic electronics enough to repair devices and household appliances, build custom servers from the ground up, remote field wiring, you name it. So why the hell can't I wire a pickup? Who wants to make me feel smart again?

Re: Wiring Help...Feelin' stupid...

Welcome to the forum

To me it looks like the original pickup wire is long gone, so someone soldered braided single conductor to the backplate and intended to attach it to the last millimeters of pickup wire coming out of the hole.

That isn't additional wire soldered to the braided wire - that's the center of the braided wire when it's pushed back or stripped back about a half inch or so.

Re: Wiring Help...Feelin' stupid...

Yes, it looks like the pickup is broken and someone strated to fix it but didnt finish.

That little stub of wire coming out of the pickup needs to be soldered to the wire coming out the center of the braided wire.

Re: Wiring Help...Feelin' stupid...

Where did you order that? And did they inform you it wasn't stock?

Ordered from Sweetwater. I've never had any problems with them prior, but based on what you're saying, this could be the first. Does anyone from SD ever visit the forum that could verify?

Re: Wiring Help...Feelin' stupid...

If you cant fix it, the custom shop can for 20 bucks. http://customshop.seymourduncan.com/rewinds-repairs-1/

Yeah...that ain't right. If that was bought as a new pickup, I'd return it. In any case, you shouldn't have to get something like that fixed...it never should have been sold. If you would like to do this through SD, PM me, and I will get you to the right person. If you want to go through Sweetwater, send them that picture, or direct them to this thread.

That doesn't sound right for Sweetwater - I'd definitely speak with them and return.

Re: Wiring Help...Feelin' stupid...

There is a good chance someone bought that pickup from them, swapped the new one for their broken one, and then returned it to them. Sweetwater would not know it was hacked if the packaging looked kosher.
Call them, I bet they will exchange it for a new one.

Re: Wiring Help...Feelin' stupid...

Yep, thats a return for sure. The above story seems all too likely with some type of people.
