Wiring help

I’ve got a LP Special p90. One volume, one tone and a 3-way. A few months ago I replaced the bridge pup with a Dimarzio tone zone (p90 sized).
Today I decided to put the stock Gibson pickup back in.
All I get is a very faint sound coming out.
Red-toggle switch
Green/white-tied and taped
Black/bare-ground

Did I wire that wrong?

The Gibson P-90 has 5 wires? Is it a stack instead of a single coil?

Is the problem just with that pickup or on all switch positions?

Otherwise it seems to be correct... time to check all your other connections.

Yeah, 5 wires. I was surprised too. It’s definitely single coil because it gets plenty of 60 cycle hum. My best guess, and I’m no expert in these matters is that the additional wires are for series/parallel or something?
The neck pickup works fine.
Maybe I have a blob of solder from the ground touching something it shouldn’t?

Re: Wiring help

Five wires means it is probably a stack. Getting hum means it was probably wired wrong. I had an LP Jr Special with dual P-100s that were silent.

Even when the guitar was factory fresh it had hum.

Now that I think of it. This guitar originally had the Gibson wiring harness from the factory. Which I had removed and wired up standard...not sure if that makes a difference.

Re: Wiring help

I agree that 5 wires probably makes it a Stack instead of a true P-90, but in that case you shouldn’t get any 60-cycle hum. You probably have something touching something else that shouldn’t be. Is your toggle a typical Gibson open-style switch? If so, make sure that it doesn’t have anything bent so it doesn’t make/break contacts correctly.

I looked at that last night...as far as I can tell it seems to be working properly.

Try this... it explains everything:

Re: Wiring help

I found this pic in another forum. This is the same neck pickup I have.
But my issue is with the bridge pup. Still, should be similar in design.

Re: Wiring help

There are 5 wires P90s for Gibsons with PCBs. The most confusing thing ever.

Hard to tell from P100 but then you get the hum.

So I would try Green is negative with bare, white positive, red & black joined.

Funny thing is:
The neck pup is wired like I posted in my OP
Red-hot
Black/bare-ground
Green/white-not used.
??

But I can certainly experiment with a couple of wire swaps.

Same thing happened to the OP in the Les Paul thread I posted. Lol

I would definitely give it a try. At least measure to see if you get reading :)
