WLH Bridge Pick Up Volume

I have WLHs in both an Epi SG and Epi Les Paul. The overall volume coming from the bridge pup in my SG seems slightly lower than the LP. I’m wondering if what I’m hearing is the tone difference between the SG and the LP instead of volume.

Could I have an issue with the pup?

Re: WLH Bridge Pick Up Volume

The difference could be due to natural factors such as differences in the pickups, electronics, resonance of the guitars. Use your meter and intuition, if it's a slight difference there's probably nothing wrong.

Re: WLH Bridge Pick Up Volume

Yes, my guess is pickup height. Also, if you use different strings on each, that can certainly affect volume.

Re: WLH Bridge Pick Up Volume

Unfortunately my screw won’t let the pick up go any higher.

whats wrong with the screw? that seems like an odd problem to have.

No idea. It’s a flat head screw. It doesn’t go any further. It’s at 4/64” when fretted at 22nd fret.

Re: WLH Bridge Pick Up Volume

The mounting springs are probably compressed all the way, happens a lot with the short leg humbuckers. Cut the springs down by a third (leave 2/3) and try it again that should give you a little more adjustment room.

Re: WLH Bridge Pick Up Volume

I was able to get a little more height out of the pickup on the SG.

Does the LP naturally have more low end punch? The SG has more mids which is throwing me off a bit when switching between the 2.

Tipically, yes. An SG is usually snarly and a Les Paul is chunkier most of the time.

The extra mids in your SG could have resulted simply because the pickup is mounted higher.

The EQ of the LP and SG are different to my ears.

Re: WLH Bridge Pick Up Volume

I've had the same pickups (not only WLH but others) in both my SG and an LP and they're different, not always different output but sometimes seems that way. If the difference is slight and you're not even sure if it's just EQ variance between the two guitars, then I doubt there is any problem with the pickups. If the difference were like 'half as loud' or 'all the bass is gone' I would think one of the guitars has a problem, not necessarily the pickups but could be.

I couldn't agree more. The thinner body of the SG, results in a lot less low end when everything else is the same.

Re: WLH Bridge Pick Up Volume

I think the bridge pickup is slightly closer to the bridge on SG's as well, isn't it?
