Woman tone: both pickups on a Les Paul, all knobs on 10, except the tone knob for the neck pickup pulled down close to zero.

Get the Cream Farwell Concert DVD from Image Entertainment.www.image-entertainment.com . and you can see Clapton do it and he explains how he set his SG to get the sound.

A combination of the neck pup of a Les PAul or SG, plus a Marshall Bluesbreaker combo (or the appropriate overdrive pedal). See the above referenced Clapton tracks. Slash's Sweet Child O' Mine is a modern example.

59 or Seth Lover set on a LP or SG, using the middle position.

its easy to accomplish:

get a searing overdrive sound going and roll the tone out of it with the guitars controls

think about the lead sound on American Woman
