Wonker’s Gibson Flying V Faded Ebony Project

Well I picked up this Gibson 2007 Black 3 Pickup Flying V Faded Body for $342.21 on eBay (I couldn’t pass that up) and it got to my house yesterday…Yay! $342.21 was a great price the last Gibson V body I got on eBay from the same seller was $130 more.

So I have a new project. I think I’m going to go with just a simple Humbucker in the bridge w/ a volume pot and an input jack, like my “V jr” project a while back. I don’t use neck position pickups ever. I do have the routing for 3 humbuckers and I think 3 humbucker’d guitars look awesome. I just can’t justify spending the money on the 2 extra pickups that will never get used.

So today I did a quick inventory of what I had around the house, I found...

Black Gibson Truss Rod Cover that Chaos sent me

I just don’t know what color pickguard I’m going to go with just yet. I’m thinking about getting an acrylic mirror silver or mirror chrome one cut for me, but I haven’t decided yet.

Jim Martin from Faith No More had a Black Gibson V with a chrome truss cover and pickguard and it looked awesome. I’ve loved that guitar since the first time I saw the Epic video.

More to come.

It's Chandler guitars. Hamer uses their product for it's guitars. That is my basis for using them.

Kewl project.....how'd the ebay seller respond to your goofy feedback?....

That's gonna look hot dude. The mirror pickguard would really make it pop, and next to that Jr V of yours, it will stand proud.

***Parts Update***

I ordered a Mirror Chrome / Black .60 Gibson Flying V 67 Reissue style pickguard cut with just a bridge Humbucker, standard mounting holes, beveled edges & for control holes just a input jack and volume pot hole.

It should have it in about two weeks.

This is what I’ve spent the most time thinking about.

I bought Sperzel Locking Tuners instead of Gibson Vintage Nickel Machine Heads with Pearloid Buttons because of my awesome employee discount. The Gibson’s cost $59.99 retail and with my discount cost me $46.85, the Sperzel’s cost $79.99 retail and with my discount cost me $37.48

I've never owned a guitar with Sperzel’s before, I hope I like them. I've never had a problem with Gibson Vintage tuners and I was a little apprehensive of picking the Sperzel’s up. I also didn’t want to have to fill the mounting holes for the original tuners and drill for the Sperzel’s stud. But I’ve read and heard to many good things about the Sperzel’s to not get them. I’ll see how they work out.

That's going to look sharp with the nickel on mirror chrome. I hope you told them to cut the pickguard for a nickel-covered pickup.

I'm starting to like the idea of simplified controls too. I like pickups wired directly to a volume, switch, and output jack. Who needs a tone control? A single volume with no cap on it allows you to do about the same thing.

One tip - wrap a bit of electrical tape around the nickel cover, underneath the pickguard. It will deaden any vibration between the pickguard and nickel cover, so you don't get any microphonic squeals.

Black n' mirrored looks cool...

but I guess it's too late to recommend a more toned down version of this?

I do feel he went a bit too far with the vibrato unit and the sparkly black look, but that guitar is sexy. You generally only see gold guards on blonde Fenders.

I dig it.

Let me make a suggestion....if I may;

You have an LP with triple bucker cutouts. So...essentially there is no combination of pups that is off limits. Why don't you go the extra mile...

Wire the whole thing with quick conects and then go to work over time making multiple pickguard/pup setups?

Just unscrew the guard, loosen the strings, and swap the whole thing out?

Have a mirror guard with a single DD
Have a white 3 ply guard with a Custom/DDneck/PG
Have a cream guard with 3 P-90's
Have steel plate one with a pair of Live Wires
Have one with a couple of P-rails

The controls can change with the guard....

Why even a switch? The volume on 0 works for off....

I'd love to do a bunch of setups but I only ever use a bridge pickup. I'm in a punk band and do about 33.3% of the singing duties. I rarely do any solos, I think I have 2 in our 30 songs we have.

I’d rather take the money I’d spend on different pickguards and pickups and over time buy different V bodies and fit them with different bridge pickups. The next “V” I want is a white body with a black pickguard and a P-Rails.

Re: Wonker’s Gibson Flying V Faded Ebony Project

Re: Wonker’s Gibson Flying V Faded Ebony Project

custom shop washburn. theyre coming out with a public commercial run of them soon though, which will also be from the custom shop. some will have one pickup, others will have 2. i'd be very tempted if they made a version on the higher end of the import line, but nothings been announced regarding that yet.
