Could tell it was "out "but not how bad till I took her to practice. Just DAYUM had someone fracked this one up!!
E and A were flat by between -20and -30 then the high E and B were sharp by about the same while the D and G were almost in tune :smack::eek:!! It was so far out I had to pull the screw and move to the next hole in the base plate on the Floyd so the saddle could move enough to intonate on 3 strings :eek2:. No freekin wonder it sounded so "off" in a band mix LOL.
Got her dialed in now, it's spot on intonated and sounding fantastic now. I still have to wonder how the heck did it get THIS :censored:screwed up as someone had to set it up like this :34:??

Shift happens.

A change of string brand could be enough to "achieve" this. Different string core to wrap mass ratios can demand different intonation correction.

Check the vibrato studs and their inserts too. String tension could have pulled these out of position.

Good call on the studs seen that before I checked and and they were fine. When I got the guitar the bridge was all hiked up as well so something strange happened here. I can assure you it was more than just a string "brand" change as I have owned more guitars that I can count and this one had the most screwed up action and intonation that was fixable by simple adjustment that I have ever come across.
Trust me some body had really screwed this ones set up up and I will bet it's why they dumped it and also why it sat on the rack at that shop for a while as it was truly unplayable as it was. Turned out good for me though as after wrestling with her for a little while to get it back right this one both sounds and plays like a dream now!!
Looked good when I got it but was a dog in playability and tone. Now that I have her set back up right she is a monster that has the playability and tone to match the looks!

Might have been a pain to setup but it is a beautiful axe.

Yup. I've landed bargain deals that way too.

Awesome looking guitar. Maybe someone took the Floyd apart for whatever reason and hadn't got a clue how to put it back together.

WOW !! Didnt know you landed that one Bro!! Sweet!!! Yeah, Ive seen some completely racked floyd set ups in shops and pawn shops espec.. always figure thats probably why they are being sold. AND, prolly the cause of a bunch of forum posts on this guitar was junk, this Carvin was so unplayable... hahah Just needed some skilled care...

Might just be the case here man. They also had glued a piece of some kind of press board to the block to block the trem then cranked down the claw. Had to have at the least pulled the springs to get the block glued in if not pull the trem completely off. This one was all fracked in the set up when I got her that's for sure. However it was nothing I couldn't fix with a little time couple of tools and some patience.
It's is a real player now that it is set up right so just a couple tweaks here and there as it takes a set is all that's left and I think she is a keeper!!

Reminds me of the Steve Vai Charvel in the Crossroads movie, even though that one didn't have any flame.

I like it.

True, embarrassing story: When I got my very first guitar, (Squier Strat) I adjusted the intonation to just to make the bridge look cool. I had no CLUE what intonation was, I just wanted to play Nirvana and some heavy metal really loud... I have learned so much since then, 12-13 years ago. This could very well be the case here.
