I thought that you might be able to answere this. I was wondering why you can't wind the top three lugs south and the bottom three north for a hum canceling pup.

I have a G&L that has there "special' designed P-90 pups and I wonder if this is what they did.

You can do this. It's just trickier and I think the D & G strings are affected funny because of the close proximity of opposing fields. I think that's why G&L did the "Z" pickup shape, but don't quote me.

I think Lindy Fralin was the first to do this with his '50's split singles {the one originally put on the PRS CE series } (not quite the same as what's being discussed here), his was more the Z thing. It's kinda the same idea as a P bass pup. Yeah, I think there would be some interaction as well between the D&G, then again, maybe not. I know on the old horseshoe magnet (used very early on in a lap steel i think it was) had a strange tremolo type of thing going on, because the phase literally changed across the pup.
