Would you ever put a JB in the neck?

Suggesting a JB/Jazz set is a safe suggestion and I'm sure it has made GC plenty of money.

If I was a manager at a GC, unless my employee was a big pickup nerd, I'd tell them "Just show them our selection, and if they want a recommendation, push them the JB".

If the customer is complaining about a muddy neck, it fixes that. If the customer wants a hotter bridge, it'll usually fix that. You can push it as the OG hot rodded pickup set, you can push it as the best selling pickup set of all time. The JB at the very least has a distinct enough sound that they will definitely notice the swap. You can give your employee a list of all the famous songs a JB or Jazz have been on.

If someone who doesn't like their pickups enough that they want a swap, but also don't know enough about pickups to where they are asking for advice, JB/Jazz isn't always the "best" option, but it's rarely a bad one.

He was asking about buying my zebra Jazz set. Not sure I want to part with them. I also have a DD 59 set. We'll see what he wants.

Maybe the salesperson was a drummer?

There was a local guitar store that had a drummer as the salesman

it was horrible until i found out about his condition and factored that in

Oh well maybe he was a better drummer than salesman

The store disappeared some years ago

A friend of mine has an MIJ Ibanez RG with a TZ and JB in the neck. Didn't play it too long, but it sounded good under high gain. The brightness of the JB kinda compensates for the output in that position.

I think the trick is to get a bridge pup to balance it with. I think in my friend's guitar, the tone zone did well.

More good info. Maybe the GC guy wasn't too far off after all.

The JB in the neck remains an exception, really. I know some people can dig it, and it certainly could be used for heavier stuff, but I wouldn't think anything remotely clean would sound all that great.

It is, but it is quite a bit less powerful than the bridge.

Yes, exactly. That's what I'm saying. And probably brighter as well. More "adequate for the neck position" than a full-size JB or a JB Jr. Bridge, I suppose.

It would be cool for someone to order a Custom Shop JB Jr. Neck in a full-size humbucker presentation.

I'd order it if I used my neck pickup more, LOL.
