Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

Well....the Customs always came off way to polite and nice to me....
While I never had anything against my JB's.
Have used those for two decades now.
Then again...I do not like either PRS or GIbson much either;)

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

I have alwsays liked the SH-5 over the SH-4; however, as stated above, the JB has a great singing lead/solo quality. I have also found that I like the JB best when using 250k pots. It seems to take on a totally different character. When using 500k, it's too barky to me ears.

I think it's contradiction versus perception versus what folks really want but say something totally different.

People scream about wanting these super high-output pickups and then find they lack the qualities that lesser output pickups have which are such a great part of a classic known sound that were used to.

I have never gone wrong erring on the side of "more vintage" with pickup selection.

I have often gone wrong when I go for something hotter or more modern than I think I might want.

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

I believe high output pickups can be great-sounding if set up correctly. Vintage-voinced models like the Seths, 59, PAF, etchave the organic qualities that the higher-output pickups lack. However, there are some models that just flat out rock with a great voice and presence.

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

none of my guitar heros that I listen to on a regular basis use the ceramic magnets - I am a little weary of the grainy quality that a sh-5 might have. but everyone seems to like em here so Im kinda torn. I guess if i bought an expensive guitar Id want the qualities of the guitar to shine through; I wouldnt put emgs in em for instance.

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

I bought the JB / Jazz combo because I had a super dark Les Paul Studio and hated the ceramic 500T that I put in the bridge. The JB is alright, lots of mids and harmonics, not much of a sparkle or chug pickup.

Sold it and got a JB/C5 hybrid...that was much better. Very complex, some of the mids and harmonics but with some low end and sparkle. Cool mix.

Just traded that for a 59/C5 hybrid as I want an even more vintage sound but still want the hybrid complexity.

And if that doesn't work out I'll probably toss a pair of GFS Vintage 59's in the guitar...people say those are pretty "clear" for a humbucker.

Same here. High output pickps are good but lack versatility.

Low output pickups can do whatever you ask them to.

However i don't think the custon series are distortion pickups, they're just variations based ona classic paf sound, even the one with a ceramic magnet doesn't sound modern or shrill or anything.

The Invader, superdistortion evolution EMG's are really high output pickups. These pickups can make an average guitar sound ok. But it's a lot of trial and error, because they affect the tone a lot so they tend to shape the sound more.

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

This forum is not a good reflection on what most people use, actually this is the nerds place;)
The JB is not for everyone, it is a classic pickup where ever you like it or not.
It is just the old saying: is it for you or not for you, because it is far from a bad pickup, and used by metalheads to fusion and pop....and around again.

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

I would swap a JB for a Custom 5 but not a regular Custom. The Custom is too constricted on the high end for me.

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

reason most use JB's is because its so well known, and its a stock pickup in just about every friggin guitar!!! Custom nice? That is one mean sounding pickup. I think it sounds meaner than the JB for sure. THe only thing i like the JB for is for playing TOOL. Besides that lead only. I think chords sound pretty nasty with the JB don't like them at all with it.

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

in my previous posts i stated that i already had a CUSTOM in one of my parts-0-caster...and stated that i had compared it to the JB in my PRS...

...well...due to my bad memory...the pickup is actually the CUSTOM CUSTOM.
so i have no experiece with the CUSTOM yet...until it arrives i will just have to wait it out.

i had a extensive play with the PRS/JB last night and must say i really like its lead sound...but its the chords that seem to have this "fizz out" quality to them.
i cannot wait to hear the CUSTOM.

awe dude completely different from the regular custom you are in for a treat :D
ANd yeah jb is great for leads, but i just don't like anything else about it, even the leads aren't anything you can't get (or close enough to) with much better all arounder pickups.

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

no, i have done it, and did not like it. Haven't tried it in a PRS though. My custom 22 has the original dragon 1's and i believe that bridge pickup is similair to a custom though. However, still no on the swap, the JB has got it goin on and there's no real reason to take it out of any guitar in my opinion.

I'm sure compared to a demon and invader it does have it going on :9:

Re: would you swap a Seymour Duncan JB (SH4) for a Custom(SH5)

well...i took the JB out last night and installed the custom. i wanted to have a play with the JB first so i could try and tell the diffrence but i didnt have any time...

but yeah i could tell straightaway there was an improvememt in clarity to my chords. the custom still has the highs i liked about the jb but not that "certain frequency fizz" and the leads sound good to my ears to i can dial in a bit more gain on my lead channel if i want now.

so i am really happy i got the custom...ill have to have a bit more of a play tonight and maybe tweak some settings...and also give the cobra some volume.

now i have a spare jb...and g.a.s for an all mahagohny body guitar to put it in...hmmm maybe another PRS or a Les paul
