Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

My very random thoughts: my 2016 LP Studio is really damn good. I am gettin rid of my mia strat (as seen in the Ibanez az thread).

The studio I got new came with a perfect setup. A used 2006 may be different. Also I know the plekking started more recently.

JBs are usually better on strats and super strats. Great pickup, wrong guitar for it. A custom / 59 hybrid in the bridge is amazing, though uoa5 Custom (have to magnet swap yourself) is the best pickup I have ever used. Also if they are using a stock .033 cap, it may be too dark for your taste, especially in the neck. .022 is good. I actually have no cap on my neck (pearly gates) but that's a bit extreme.

Playability wise I would take an LP any day.

Your call. I would personally sell the mia outright and get a newer LP studio (2016 or later) that has plekking and modern weight relief. And ignore anyone who says non-weight relieved LPs have better tone. Hogwash. Maybe slightly different, but no less good. Wood isn't very important anyway.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

I would not make that trade. Made in USA strat > LP studio
If the LP was a higher model, maybe. Or if the strat was not a USA model, maybe. But as described, I don't think this is a good deal.

I agree with the posters who said sell the strat outright and get the LP you want

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

Coming late to the party but I learned the hard way to never get rid of any of my guitars. If I want something new I'll just save for it.

I traded two guitars for what (at the time) I thought was a superior guitar. It wasn't.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

Honestly; depends on the Strat. I’m not really a Standard Strat fan. Fenders, USA or otherwise (IMHO) are hit or miss. I’d take the Paul if it’s a good one.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

+1 On meeting and taking the Les Paul for a test drive. Remember they come with more than one neck profile if you like one over the other it could be a deal breaker. I’m not a fan of the narrow neck. If the Studio plays nice you might find you like it. If the pickups aren’t your taste, that’s an ez problem to fix.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

The values are close enough that for me it would just be a matter of which one felt better in hand.
I do however see way more studios on CL than I see USA strats, and both the asking and selling prices seem to reflect that.

You could also offer to accept a couple small items like pedals/pickups for the price difference,,,,,,,at the risk of offending lol.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

Depends which USA Strat. If it's one that sells for around the same price as the LP Studio, possibly. Assuming I could try the LP first.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

I've got three Strats and one Studio. Oddly enough I'm not that big of a Strat fan but
I'd say it's six to one and a half dozen to the other. Go to GC and play some Studios then decide.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

If you dont like strats usually, maybe. Will it be your last Single coil guitar? If you already have a stable of humbuckers, then no. The monetary value isnt like its a huge disparity. Go with what you want to play more

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

You can get a LP Studio for much less. With cash in hand you can sample a dozen LP Studios and find the one you want, plus throw in a pretty good Strat Squire while you're at it and have the best of both worlds.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

Keep the Strat or sell towards a higher end used Les Paul.....

Totally agree with this. Or as Dave74 also says, ask for something else to even the deal - a pedal etc.

Also, only do the trade if he gives you the original Gibson pickup and its original hard case with it as well (presuming your strat has its orig hard case). Modded guitars are often less valuable for resale.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

Speaking strictly of monetary value, it's a pretty square trade. But you'd obviously need to see that particular Les Paul first. The trade's not worth it if you won't get any use out of the LP.

Re: Would you trade a USA Strat for a Gibson Les Paul Studio

As long as it is NOT a faded LP, and it is in good/great condition....I don't think it's a bad trade. In the used market around my area, the LP would be an easier sell, there are just so many Strats for sale, they have kind of saturated the used market and are hard to sell for any real money.
