Re: WOW, check out this PRS MCCarty

I've done a bit of hovering around Birds and Moons, and there's a few peeps on there that say the rosewood necked PRS guitars are a bit dark sounding. Would the SDF rosewood PRS users care to give their opinion?

As for PRS' quality, I'm always amazed at the consistency. With PRS, it's not a matter of 2 or three in every ten being a good'un, but more like 9. I could replace my '94 CU22 with a brand new PRS that is every bit as good straight off the shelf of my local dealer.

My PRS is an excellent, solid, toneful guitar. I agree that duncans help, though. I've had people that are openly sceptical of PRS guitars for all kinds of reasons play or hear my guitar and then admit that it's a killer piece. And my PRS is no 10 top masterpiece, either. It's a dinged, tarnished, gigging guitar.

I'd buy another PRS in a heartbeat.

Re: WOW, check out this PRS MCCarty

I have a custom wound set of Phat Cats in mine. Nothing too dark in my opinion. It's an option that someone ought to at least check out if they're going to drop that kind of cash.

Even though I'm a BaM guy, can I comment? :)

IMO, using the term "darker" doesn't really capture the essence of the tonal difference between a mahogany neck and a rosewood neck. Though the resonant peak is probably a bit lower (I can't say for sure 'cause I've only A/B'd it with my maple-necked CEs) I wouldn't describe it as "dark".

The resonance of the neck seems much greater relative to finished PRS necks. I dunno how much of that is a function of material (IRW) and how much is a function of its unfinished nature.

IMO, the tonal differences are fairly subtle (to my ear). Whether it's preferable or not is simply a matter of taste. That said, I believe that the rosewood neck is consistent with Paul's philosophy of using the most resonant traditional materials in constructing a guitar.

Interesting stuff. Unfortunately, there is basically one dealer in NZ, and they are pretty well stocked for such a small, slow moving market. An IRW/BRW would probably have to be a special order...

Here's my two. The teal black is a dragon only color, and in 2000 they made a few McCarties in this color. It now has zebra C-5/59 and tonepros bridge.
Both of these are millenium guitars....2000's

As for my gearlist, see 'my gear' In addition, I don't have pics of my Vox Valvetronix AD60 yet. I use that on my straight Jubilee cab.

Re: WOW, check out this PRS MCCarty

Oh yeah, and the large heels are preferred by anyone who knows PRS. That's where the tone transfer between the neck and body has the edge on the short heel versions.
SUSTAIN! The tonepros adjustable bridge added even more sustain. I have 3 amazing Les Pauls, but the tone on that teal black McCarty has them all beat in many ways. Mostly the string to string clarity and resonance.
