SOLD!!!
I've got a brand new Dean USA "Tyrant" pickup for sale. This is the unique pickup found in Michael Amott's signature Dean guitar and combines the sound of the JB with the look of the Invader! Any fan of rock and metal should give the Tyrant a shot!

Michael Amott used a JB exclusively in Arch Enemy until his Dean signature was introduced. The Tyrant pickup takes the JB and tightens up the bass for a more percussive bottom, while retaining the great singing mids and soloing "bloom" of the original JB. You get 100% classic rock lead tones at lower gain settings and brutal riffing when the distortion gets thick. This pickup is very articulate and cuts through a mix extremely well. If you want a JB with a tighter bottom end, lots of sustain and excellent clarity under maximum gain, this pickup is for you!

Specs:
16.2K
Alnico V
4-Conductor

Anyone? I just know someone here would absolutely love this pickup!

Re: WOW! Dean USA Michael Amott "TYRANT" Pickup!

So this pickup would be more for heavy rythms and not so much articulate lead playing? I say this based solely on the Invader poles. That is one of the key reasons the Invader isn;t such a great lead pickup with those pole pieces. Swap in regular hex poles and it changes it significantly. Still not a super great lead pickup with the hexpoles but better than before. Hard to imagine these pole pieces would make a JBish pickup tighter... I guerss the only way I could see this is if the pickup itself with normal slugs/screws might sound like an icepick and with the Invader poles it tames it some? Not sure but curious is another Duncan member buys it and experiments.

Re: WOW! Dean USA Michael Amott "TYRANT" Pickup!

WRONG! This pickup IS great for leads! Very similar "bloom" and upper mid presence to the JB we all know. The tighter bottom just makes it more solid for high-gain metal riffing and played back-to-back with a JB, you can tell the difference. It gives most players who've had a love-hate relationship with the JB the clarity they want, without having to go to a Ceramic-based pickup like the Duncan Distortion and loose that great Alnico V flavor! It also works better than the JB in woods like Mahogany, where the JB can come off as "loose" and/or less defined to some.

Dean's own description says:

- Super heavy high gain rhythm • Classic rock lead tone -
High output and strong high-end with singing harmonics and sustain. Excellent choice for everything from classic rock to all out metal.

The Tyrant is a very versatile pickup. The only thing this pickup and the Invader really have in common are the aggressive looks (oversized pole pieces). Otherwise, it's clearly Dean's (i.e. Pat Baker's) attempt to take the Seymour Duncan JB and edge it slightly towards high-gain metal, while keeping to the JB tradition of a 16.2K wind and an Alnico V magnet at the heart for killer rock tones! Michael Amott is NOT just a rhythm player!!!

Re: WOW! Dean USA Michael Amott "TYRANT" Pickup!

I am def tempted. I've always wanted the lead tone of Marty Friedman (JB)...but wanted the bottom end to be tighter and more chunky...

Re: WOW! Dean USA Michael Amott "TYRANT" Pickup!

It's a Detonator with an A5.

If that helps people understand, great. However, most probably don't realize the Detonator is nothing like the Invader in tone, despite its identical external appearance.

Also, the Dean TYRANT uses Nickel pole pieces (instead of the black oxide caps the Detonator and Invader use) and is Made right here in the USA!

It's a boutique pickup for under $70! Someone jump on this!

Re: WOW! Dean USA Michael Amott "TYRANT" Pickup!

Looks like a winner to me! I have played the older Trivium Matt Heafy guitar with his old sig pickup from DEAN and that thing sounded great. Def worth a try. If it's still available in a week PM me!

Re: WOW! Dean USA Michael Amott "TYRANT" Pickup!

Isn't the pat baker like a jb also? Whats the sound difference in the two? Also, you ever try the Equalizer?

Re: WOW! Dean USA Michael Amott "TYRANT" Pickup!

Without a doubt, the TYRANT is the closest design to the JB in all of the Dean DMT line, but with the modern tweaks decribed above. It strikes a much needed balance between output, feel, tightness, expression and tone. You can crank it through a vintage Marshall for all-out classic rock sounds or pump it through a high-gain modern amp for crushing metal. It's a versatile design that does a wide range of styles well, much like the JB...only better suited to the modern player.

The BAKER ACT was clearly inspired by the JB, but is NOT the same pickup by a long shot. The Baker Act is even higher output than the JB/Tyrant with more compression and an aggressive mid-heavy attack. It doesn't clean up nearly as easy and is generally grainier all over. Yes, it's gutsy and in-your-face like the site description says, but the Baker Act doesn't nail the classic rock sound quite like the Tyrant and isn't nearly as smooth when soloing, though it is powerful and equally as dynamic and expressive in its own way.
