Wowie! Splawn Nitro

This one is stocked with EL34's. It's so awesome. I thought it would be much different than a Quickrod but it's not except it's a little smoother, shifted a little more towards low mid and low end, and does not get as saturated.

I really was expecting an Uberschall type of amp but I would have to say it's less metal sounding than a Quickrod. In fact Splawn says on his website that the Nitro has more saturation and low end but it does not get as saturated a Quickrod nor does it have the amount of low end that an Engl does. It reacts to volume like an old Marshall because when you turn it up loud it starts getting more bass.

I have not tried it in 50 watt mode yet but the sound I was getting in my bedroom at 100 watts was very nice. The volume and gain taper work fine for low volumes and light overdrive.

My JSX has a wonderful clean channel but the Nitro is great too. It's not so loose and chimey as the JSX but it does just about anything you could possibly want to do on a clean amp.

My only complaint is that the mid does not seem effective. The treble control turned way down or way up makes a huge difference. The bass control is not as effective as the treble control but still a bigger difference than the middle control. Turning the middle control all the way up or down produces minor results in comparision.

I do not know if this is an effect of low volume playing. I did not get to crank it loud for long enough to experiment with different sounds. Can someone tell me how the Nitro tone controls are supposed to affect each other? Is it one of those kinds of amps where you have to adjust the treble to get more or less mids or bass?

I can't imagine using the Nitro without a pedal in front, even if it's only a mild transparent boost. You cannot get the gain control to go past 3:00 without getting very noisy. Using my Nova System OD I can push the clean and overdrive channels perfectly without having to use a noise gate. It's like the Nitro was made to use with pedals.

The clean side is very clean but the drive channel gets all the gritty cleans and in between sounds. One curious thing I noticed about the clean side of the Nitro is that once the volume gets a little past 9:00, which is ear bleeding loud, the clean channel starts sounding different. It goes from a nice clean to a GREAT full sounding clean.

If anyone can give me some tips on using the Nitro I would be greatful. I want to get all the potential out of this awesome amp.

If you send that thing to me I will sort out the eq controls for you and make you a list of good settings for different sounds. It may take a while, but it will be worth it.....

Im sorry I dont have any tips, but looking forward to what you find out.. I love my QR and was curious about the Nitro.. Im suprised you say the QR seems heavier.. I figured the Nitro ( I know about the low mid eq) would be much more brootz

The Nitro is smoother than the QR, less high mid punch, more low mid punch but essentially still sounds like a Marshall. Mine has EL34's and to me sounds similar to a JVM. The Nitro can get pretty saturated but I think the QR has more gain on gear 3 or at least has more useable gain.

My Nitro gets very noisy with gain set to 3:00. Anything after that is too noisy. The distortion is real nice but when I put my TC Vintage OD I get an amazing tone out of it.

I am on the fence at this point wondering whether I want a Quickrod instead or keep the Nitro. To me the Quickrod is more versatile but the Nitro sounds better.

Re: Wowie! Splawn Nitro

Does your Nitrol have the FX loop volume control at all?

That's a great tool for getting more from the amp at a lower volume level.

Using the FX Loop level DOES change the tone slightly, but nowhere near as much as a power attenuater etc would.

Yes I does. It's a great improvement over the old Nitro.
