Wrong choice of pickups?

i'm glad you ended up liking the pearly gates. that's my favorite humbucker!
please let me know how the quarterpounders perform. thinkin about puttin one in the middle position of my h/s/s strat.
cheers! =)

I just hooked up the Quarterpounders. Wow, these things combine high output with a fat, beefed up vintage Strat sound. The Pearly Gates isn't the loudest hum pup of course, but the QP's easily match its output. The three of them make a great set of pup's with versatile sound possibilities.

YESSS, I think I have finished my quest for a great guitar.... for now.... :)

Depending on how that guitar is wired you have a couple of options.

If you use the QPs you might want to consider a 250k tone pot. The QPs might be a bit bright/harsh with 500k pots. Your ears will let you know.

The QPs are not hum cancelling which may or may not be an issue for you, but consider it. With the switch in that guitar you can alter the wiring to split the PG so that the PG/QP combo in the #4 position will be hum cancelling and it will sound closer to a traditional Strat #4 tone. That way you'll only have to deal with hum in the #1 (neck) and #3 (mid) positions.

I suggested the Hot Stack mid and lil59 in the neck because they are both hum cancelling. The Hot Stack has a warmer but still very Stratty mid position tone and the lil59 really bridges the gap between the tones of a HB and a single coil in the neck position.

I have a JB/Hot Stack/lil59 combo in a Strat and I love it. If you add a push pull pot and use it to combine the PG in the bridge with the lil59 in the neck you'll get a suprisingly close SG mid position tone as well. It makes for a very versatile and toneful guitar.

Re: Wrong choice of pickups?

This worries me.. I want to order a guitar made of the same kind of woods, just with a full shred/jazz combination..I mailed the Seymour Duncan customer support, and asked them about whether the combination would be good for hard rock/metal or not, and they said it would be perfect, but I don't know now, sounds like it is bright enough to cut off your head, haha, god damnit.

Re: Wrong choice of pickups?

Not nessessarily, your amp and its settings, speakers, strings and other factors have a huge impact on tone.

The Full Shred is definately hotter and darker than a PG. The Jazz neck is no where near as bright as a VR or single coil.

You should be fine, just like the SD folks said.

Yes, I have 250k pots. I have a 5-way switch and a push/pull switch in the volume pot tapping the PG in the 3, 4 and 5 position.

Hum is no issue with the QP's by the way, at least not on my Traixis & 20/20 rig, not even at high gain. My guitar has metal paint in the wiring cavity, that may do the trick.
