OK, heres my question, BC Rich Acrylic Guitars, how do they sound????? Bad Im thinking but ive never played one so... u guys tell me.

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

The Dan Armtrong guitars are acrylic, extremely heavy, and sound pretty good, actually.
They're made from Lucite, tho; this may be cheap plastic, for all I know.

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

I have only marginal experience with an Acrylic Warlock ... and I wasn't really impressed, but who knows ... most likely it wasn't set up well to begin with so ...

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

I didn't think they sounded that bad... heavy as all get out, but they are fun, and certainly unique.

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

I don't think it's the actual body that makes them sound decent, it's the Dan Armstrong humbucker. I remember in an interview, Dave Grohl raved about how good it sounded distorted.

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

I don't know, call me old school, I just can't see getting any true, organic tone outta one. I've never played one, so who knows. It just doesn't seem right to me. It's been done before, with some success but I can't see them ever really taking off. Yeah WTF?

Peace,

Darrin

nah.. those armstrongs sound great ... both the cats from fu manchu are use'n em .. fitted w/ a hotrail ... sounds CRUSHING! to me .. I kinda poo-poo the non-wood guitars being more of a traditionalist .. but the armstongs are really nice guitars thru and thru..

Lucite is good acrylic (US equivalent to Perspex, made by the same people, different brand name), the top of the market in US (I used to work for a sheet plastic distributor :) )

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

ive heard one played before (a les paul style one) and is sounded allmost rediculously bright.

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

I did a neck replacement on a Lime Greenish/Yellow BC Rich. I believe it was equipped with Demarzio PUPS. It actually sounded pretty god considering. It was extremley heavy.... Heavier than a LP, so I would think it would be hard to GIG with!!

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

If you do buy one, watch out for the headstock, I've seen more than one case of Gibsonitis on these. I don't know why, but they made the neck wood and the headstock lucite. The bond isn't as secure as wood on wood. Just don't drop it and you'll be fine.

hell yeah, i really dig the Fu Manchu tone, real warm and huge, from an acrylic guitar and a JCM 2000. Who'd a thought it?

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

Anybody else have experience with lucite body guitars? Only a few threads showed up in a search for lucite...the consensus seems to be lucite is really dense / heavy and bright. Anybody try darker pups with it? -DiMarzios?

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

several years ago my dad built an acrylic flying V and a matching Explorer...they were cool as hell...weighed 2 tons...EACH but still cool.

They sound pretty cool IMO...the tone is kind of hard, not very open sounding at all, but distorted, very articulate and pretty neat.

Dave Grohl uses the Dan Armstrong reissues quite a bit, and Joe Perry has used an original Dan Armstrong for slide for ages...Greg Ginn from Black Flag used one for his whole career, Keith Richards used one for a while...

oh yeah...Geezer Butler also played a Dan Armstrong bass...

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

kirk hammet has a hollow lucite tele by ESP, and its filled with that blue wave machine oil, looks awesome. sounds damn good as far as i can tell on the song he used it on their "cunning stunts" dvd (the song being "am i evil").

Re: WTF Acrylic Guitars?

You could always use Active pickups and then it wouldn't matter...hehe...

anyway, the Ibanez Joe Satriani acrylic guitar sure looked cool, it was just the body which was clear...oh yeah, and the pickups too.

I have an acrylic BC Rich mockingbird, it does weigh alot, more than any other guitar i've ever picked up. I thought it sounded good, alot of low end, it wasn't overly bright, but it lacked mids. This was all with stock pickups. With mine, i had the problem with the headstock breaking off of the neck. Once i get the cash to replace the neck, i plan on messing around with some different pickup combos. It was a unique tone, i always prefered my les paul, but my bass player loved the tone from the mockingbird. I can't see them being used for jazz or blues, but they'll work great for metal, hard rock, hardcore or anything along those lines.
