I think a lot of this is the multiplier of 2 separate things

1) Inflation (as already pointed out)

2) Massive nostalgia market has finally matured for 80s and 90s stuff, and Boomers being the wealthiest generation ever having the money to create an incredible collector market and prop it up.

this has super powered prices collecting and the secondary market -like the crests of 2 waves colliding.

Also, let’s remember that the current listings are things that are NOT sold and may not be representative of actual market prices. For actual market prices one would need to look at the reverb guide or sold eBay listings.

I’ve personally noticed that prices for pedals have plateaued in the last few weeks in the places where I buy them (ie TGP, TalkBass).

Mm, what people ask vs what something actually sells for can be two different things. The impact of the plague also needs to be factored in somewhat - since production slowed down at the time, getting a new guitar was more difficult, so people turned to the used market.

Agree about the 'nostalgia market'. I like old Ibanez stuff, and things there have gone up substantially in some cases; this stuff has become vintage also, I guess. People seem to feel comfortable asking, for instance, around 1k (or more) for an old RG550, even if it's not in the best condition. Yet, a lot of guitars also end up collecting cyber dust due to higher prices.

As someone who enjoys playing ( not particularly well) as opposed to admiring I have generally not found high end guitars particularly essential E.g I actually preferred playing my 2006 Korean made Washburn Idol to a Les Paul standard I owned for a while. Both were purchased second hand .One cost nearly 5 times as much as the other. .However I agree prices have greatly increased over the past 15 years The current cost of a new PRS SE equates to what you paid for a second hand older US core model 10 years ago.

The old guideline was that the second hand price was around 50/65% of the new price seems to have gone.

On the more positive side quality control low on budget priced Far East imports is now of a fairly high standard with companies like Rondo in the US and Thoman (Harley Benton) in Europe offering some very playable guitars at bargain prices Plus there are some excellent upper low end guitar manufacturers like Sire .if you don't need a prestige name on the head stock.

It's the golden age for this, truly great imports at inexpensive prices....

If people want to pay for vintage nostalgia -they are going to get hit hard.

I used to buy gear from Revrrb and Ebay .... but man, those prices for used gear even surpassing the price of new gear .

I'm glad my days of GASing are long behind me .

I’m seriously thinking of putting up a bunch of gear that I don’t really use anymore. And I’ll put high up prices just to see what happens.

I've done this and sold a bunch. Trick is to just keep them up there, and be prepared to wait.
