So over the last week or so I've hit it with the stripper twice more, used both Vinegar and Ammonia on it (The stripper can said to use Vinegar to deactivate and remove the stripper from the wood) and I read that the Ammonia can darken the grain somewhat and possibly remove the green color, depending on what it was. I also scrubbed it really good with water and 3M pads. I'm gonna call it, as much of the green that can come out has. It's still a little colored (especially in the Maple middle stripes) but short of taking 1/4" off the top and bottom, this is as good as it's gonna get.
I did find a nice piece of veneer for the headstock, I glued that on tonight
I SHOULD have gotten a piece of Ash if I wanted it to be like my Skylark, or just painted the headstock black like it was originally, but the quilty Birch was too pretty to pass up. I have all my clamps on there now, I hope that was enough...

I hope you had enough clamps on there. :9: I know thin veneer can be really hard to work with. You might have something thicker? Also with teh added thickness will the machine heads screw on ok?

Well **** **** **** **** **** **** ****!!!
I went to take the clamps off just before work today, and the veneer just fell off without me even touching it. The glue didn't stick to the veneer AT ALL. And now I gotta get all the glue back off the headstock... I cleaned everything with Naptha and blew off with compressed air, both pieces of wood, I used Titebond, I had the glue spread evenly all over both sides, and clamped it all down ASAP... I don't know what happened. Maybe I need different veneer or something. Ugh.

I saw that coming man. Sorry. 2 ****ty irwin clamps and 3 pesky poo poo just aint gonna do it haha.
Make sure you use a piece of timber to clamp down onto over the headstock. I would have coverd that entire headstock in clamps.

Go for one big piece the same size as the headstock maybe slightly bigger. Dont worry man these things happen and it will be worth it in the end. Once all the work is done you soon forget about the troubles along the way.

OK so I had some more time to work on this today. I got a lot more done, but it ain't finished yet...
I sanded all the glue off the headstock face
I filled in the tuner screw holes
I widened the bridge recess route (the original bridge was about 1mm narrower on each side, than a standard Fender hardtail bridge. The string-thru holes line up fine, though) I could have bought 2 or 3 new Fender bridges for what one "vintage" Mats. bridge would have gone for, which could also be worn out or rattle, or whatever, so I decided to just re route for a new bridge. My Skylark has a non-standard bridge, too... I'm OK with that.
THe mounting holes were all in the wrong spots, so I filled those in, too.
THe strap button hole by the neck already was drilled out, I turned down a dowel to fill that hole.
THe other strap button looked like they broke a screw off in the body, a big one... so I dug out my "screw extractor"
and dug THIS out:
I'm not sure what the heck they had in there, it's way bigger than any screw I've used on a strap button. Plus it's brass. Whatever, it's gone now.
I doweled that up too. I'm letting everything dry for a day or 2, before I saw the dowels off and sand everything flat again.
I did get an Electrosocket, but I don't know if it will fit in the output jack hole. I do have a metal plate around somewhere, for the jack to go on. Hm, maybe, measure stuff first before ordering next time?
I really want a set of P-rails for this guitar. Now that it's getting closer to the finish, I gotta figure out something for pickups.

I sanded it all down again (up to 400) and slathered on the pore filler last night. I'll knock that down and fill it again (tonight hopefully when the kids go to bed) and then it'll be ready for clear. No color finish, just clear shellac (or Poly, depending on what I have more of) Once the finish is.... finished, it's assembly time. I have most of the wiring: LP style 2vol/2tone/3way, plus a "Varitone" I found online. I have the bridge, a set of knobs (plus a fancy Chicken Head knob for the Varitone), an Electrosocket output jack, and tuners but I still need:
A nut (I want a black one, probably a Tusq, but I have half-a-dozen Brass blanks in my parts box right now)
Back cavity covers (I have a sheet of black pickguard material, I just need to cut it to shape)
Pickups (I want P-rails, but I just don't have the $ for them)
and the string ferrulles for the back. All the ones I've seen are bigger than the holes in the guitar, so I either need to drill the holes out, or find small ones. The bridge I have can go string-thru or topload so I have some time to figure that one out.
