Xotic BB Preamp

Tell me about it. And while I'm at it, how are their AC and RC boosters? I mainly use dirt pedals in front of an already crunchy amp to add a bit more to it, so how do each of these perform there? Or through the FX loop?

Thanks for the info guys.

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

BB Pre sounds great. Nice way to add clean punch, or to kick your amp's front end "night in the ruts."

I've used the EP Booster the same way. It has a subtle eq curve (selectable with internal switches), and can really add a nice bit of gain for solos. Also sounds great as an always-on tone enhancer.

I have no experience with their other boosters, but seeing how awesome the other Xotic pedals are, I would not hesitate to pull the trigger if I found them somewhere.

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

I've got an AC Booster.i've got other pedals to drive the amps input but keep coming back to the AC. It's not going to work for those wanting to really push an amp, but that's just fine with me.

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

The only "booteek" pedal I own. I was diehard SD-1 guy until I met the BB. They're in the same class, but the BB is chunkier, it handles pick attack better. Also, the large available boost and EQ make it way more flexible than a typical SD-1 or TS, so you can dial it in to suit a number of different amps.

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

I had the Caline CP-18, which is the cheap Chinese clone. I did like that one quite a bit.

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

A lot of praise so far. What amps are you guys using, and what are you playing, style wise?

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

Industrial Death Metal in open B.

Any and all amps/preamps/amp sims/pedals that I can find.

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

I use mine in place of my SD-1 for '80s new wave Brit-rock kinda stuff.

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

Another positive vote for the Xotic brand.

For country-ish, classic rock and prog-ish, I use the EP booster to PUSH and the RC booster to PULL. Both are excellent, but the RC is a magic little pedal, it adds a certain quality to your tone without adding anything to your tone...ha. That's not easy to do. I would try a BB if I didn't already have so many great ODs.

I rank the RC in my top 2 for utility pedals.

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

My AC mainly goes into the SE5a 5w head I built. With only a single 12AX7 and an EL84 in the signal chain, it has very low gain overall, unless run flat out on everything. The Xotic does a good job of pushing a basically good tone into overdrive territory.

Re: Xotic BB Preamp

I had one and didn't really get on with it. It seemed liked the pedal just didnt jive with my amps, always sounding congested and losing note definition. To be fair I gave up a little soon but I found a Keeley TMB that worked straight out of the box. Amp wise I'm using Cornford and Marshall playing classic/ hard rock. The TMB is essentially a dual treble booster but don't be fooled by the "treble booster" thing coz it adds something special to the sound and maintains clarity and definition! However, if you buy a BB used you won't lose anything anyway so that tells you something about how good and highly regarded they are!

Recorded this new riff tonight ... Strat > BB Preamp > Mooer chorus > Vox Lil Night Train > line out into my interface.
