hey guys. i use my amps dirt (and a decent amount at that) but I like a little boost in front and one in the FX loop for solos.

but I have been in the market for a new one. have any of you guys used an RC booster?

or any of these?
-durham sex drive
-creation audio labs MK 4.23
-pigtronix class a boost
-plush pure gain

so whats your favorite boost pedals?
Thanks!

Re: xotic RC booster... and other clean boosts

i have heard good things about the fat boost 3. I guess they are all pretty good but my thinking is to get something that won't mess with my EQ or give me a mid hump like my tubescreamer. the tubescreamer is good but i'd like to leave it on all the time.

Re: xotic RC booster... and other clean boosts

timmy eh? I have heard good things. what do they cost?

Re: xotic RC booster... and other clean boosts

Fat boost, timmy, rc... all kick arse. Really cant go wrong with either. I also love my sho ;)

Re: xotic RC booster... and other clean boosts

SHO gets a lot of good reviews online but I've never checked one out. do any of you guys use them as a little extra kick in front of an already overdriven amp?

Its a beast when boosting a dirty amp!... i think it shines best when boosting a breaking up fender. I'll try to get a clip up within the next few days.

On a side note, if boosting for leads... id go RC, or AC booster. More tonal control and heaps of volume on tap.

A Timmy will cost you $129 new, and last I've seen they're still about $150 used.

JHS Morning Glory and Timmy are both great! The MG adds a tad more hair than the Timmy. The Walrus Audio Voyager looks awesome too... I've been wanting to try one out, and I think Hoss just got one.

I have 6 boosts on my board at the moment, they all have very different sounds and do different variations on the same thing: z.vex SHO, Nick Greer Sweetback Driver, Thundertomate Phil Hilborne boost, Catalinbread Naga Viper, and Analogman Beano Boost. I also have an Xotic BB Preamp; it can be used as a clean boost as well.

What flavour of boost are you looking for?

It's worth checking out the Xotic site. I seem to recall they had some decent demos on there. Don't forget the 'Plus' versions too.

Ac, rc and fat boost all mess with your eq...but in this case its a good thing because your amp behaves differently at different levels going into V1. However they only mess with your eq insofar as you want them to. The eq knobs are really useful imo.
Having the separate treb and bass controls allows you to tailor the boosted sound to exactly how you want it. All three of these boosts offer a little of theirown grit (the AC has quite a lot) on offer too, which also is useful in shaping your own version of what a perfect boosetd sound should be like. Regular clean boosts like micro amps, LPB's and even the MI boost 'n' buff (up to about 5 on its dial*) are more or less flat, which seems like a good idea, but being able to trim makes a big difference for the better to compensate for how your amp behaves. In the real world there is no such thing as "flat" so if you just want what sounds like your regular tone but with more gain, its actually necessary to trim things a little.

* the MI is "flat" up to 5 where it can give 20db boost, after that it moves more into treble booster territory and can give you 35db from memory. Its a nice pedal, but definitely has a signature sound. Its dependant very much on how it interacts with your amp...good with dark amps. I liked it with my musicman, but not so much with a marshall. With a fender amp it was juts too bright and cutting for my preference.

The super hard on has a nice shape to its eq and also has a cool tube like feel to it. Again it has its own sound that can work really well, but if you want to change something, you are stuck with it. Having said that, it does not give too much brightness, but it really does push thru the mids nicely. Really nice, simple pedal. Very hard to beat.

The AC boost is really more in the overdrive realm and is voiced to sound somewhat like a vox amp. If you want transparent, the RC or the fatty are the best ive tried.

thanks for all the help guys. it looks like i need to get my hands on some of these to try out.

Re: xotic RC booster... and other clean boosts

A good idea, if you can shop around.

If not, just pull the trigger on the RC Booster. It's reputation didn't come without delivering the goods.

I have an EP Booster I use for leads, like it a lot! Just ordered a Retro-Sonic FA-1 which I will use as an always on if I like what I hear..

Definitely...

As far as what to go with, it really depends on if you're wanting any "flavor" with the boost, or wanting a pure "clean" boost?
