Yamaha FGX730SCA vs CPX700

Besides cosmetics and side / back woods, what are the main differences between them?

Is either generally considered a superior instrument?

Re: Yamaha FGX730SCA vs CPX700

FGX is Yamaha's version of the classic Dreadnaught. It's more of a mix of a D and a Jumbo. The CPX is more a mini jumbo of sorts. They both have their own voice in terms of sound.

Both are great guitars, and Yammy has extremely high quality for the price. The CPX is, IMO, the better of the two. Better electronics, better wood, and probably higher construction tolerances.

In the end, if you have the chance, play them both. They'll have completely difference voices.

I played the CPX and the FG730 (dread acoustic, non-cutaway) . I realy liked both. The shop did not have the acoustic-electric FGX

I am looking for something on the smaller side of a dread so it sounds from your description the CPX is more in line

being an acoustic guy like myself (it's all I play), I suggest spending a good amount of time with both. Don't worry about size, or electronics or anything such as that. It's all details that don't matter when it comes down to which one speaks to you best.

I am more concerned about size for comfort. I have a Seagull S6 right now and the wide neck plus full size dread body is to beig to be ideal for me

Yeah, the seagull necks def. take some getting used to. Is it the thickness of the body, or the width that are keeping you from being comfortable? If it's thickness, both of the guitars you asked about have around the same depth of a D style. If it's width, then the FGX is out and the CPX is the winner.

No matter what you decide, with Yamaha, after a good setup, will very rarely disappoint.

If you want a thinner guitar check out the Yamaha's series APX guitars. I don't really have any experience with the CPX guitars, but I have a Yamaha FGX and my brother has a Yamaha APX. The APX is more comfortable in my opinion and has better clarity, but the FGX I think has a fuller sound. The quilty of both guitars is excellent.

I went and played the CPX700 again today. Iliked it but I didn't love it. The problem now is I also played a Taylor 110ce ($699) and a Breedlove C250/EF ($879) and I really liked themboth alot more than the Yamaha which was a much lower cost of $489. I don't think I could look at the Yamaha again knowing that for a few hundred more I can get a guitar that I think sounds and feels better at a whole different level

So before I go $$$ crazy, I think I am getting a JJB Electronics transducer pickup system ($49) and installing it in my S6 and I WILL like it :banghead:

Everyting else aside, I am getting used to the feel of the Seagull and I have always loved the tone. To my ears none of the 700 series Yamahas I played in the FG or CPX series touch it and for a $700ish differnce, I can't justify a new A/E until I try the pickup install on the S6

Dude, you can get a Seagull S6 Slim (which has that awesome Seagull tone, but a smaller more "normal" neck profile) for less than the price of all three you mentioned. And for about the price of the Yammy, you can get the one with the new godin quantum II electronics (which rock).

As a hobbiest with no real *need* aside from GAS to open my wallet too wide, I'm going to try the $50 option first and give it a few weeks. If it doesn't work out, and GAS prevails any replacement I get will be a cutaway A/E - and likely either a Seagull, Taylor 100 series or Breedlove

Well, I honestly suggest D-TAR for any acoustic electric stuff. Search for my praise thread in the sound room, you'll see why.

Looks like some high end stuff, but way beyond my needs as a hobby player
