you can also get a used and whacked up EG112 on ebay for even less money if you want it just a a cadavar. :saeek:

for a starter the PAC112 should be cool. its not too expensive and last a while before an upgrade is needed.

heck,i'm still playing the PAC112.hehehe.no embarassment there. but the upgrade axe is coming real soon.

I recently sold a Pac112 and thought it was a pretty decent strat style guitar, but I recently picked up and old vintage 1990 EG112 and Im super impressed with it.
I like the sound of fender strats, and other companies that make strat copies come close to that sound to varying degrees...One of the things that really impressed me about the EG112 it it sounds dead on, like an American strat, assuming the American strat has a bridge humbucker.Maybe it is the alter wood body that both fender strats and the EG112 has?
The second thing I like is the neck...it is super comfortable, more comfortable than many fender strats that i have played.
if you want a guitar that plays and sounds better than a Fender mexican strat, but cost less money, check out a older Yamaha EG112.

By the measure of Value (Price related against all other objective and subjective categories) -it's hard to compare with the history of Yamaha on most any instrument topic -they are by far the most consistent and prolific manufacturer of everything from the most student of model to the working professional model (C7 anyone?) in many or most categories of musical instrument.

I bet most ANY A/B comparison online with other mfgs when factoring in price will dramatically be in favor of a Pacifica or similar Yamaha price conscious model and they hold their own in the other categories.

I have no idea how they have managed to do this -except that they are Japanese run which culturally speaking -places higher value on discipline and honor -and like most east asian languages, their damn actionable/modal verb in their grammar is at the very very end of the sentence -requiring you at a very early age to learn to from start to finish PAY ATTENTION! -Which may translate at some point to manufacturing. -in general manufacturing it so good overall from Asia these day

Resale value is most often the deterrent in the US market for their high end guitars (which sucks for them, G&L, and Heritage, and etc etc) -but for their lowest end? I cannot imagine their being a reason not to buy one over other the brands (except maybe that the Pacific Headstock bothers you or your rich friends with LPs are *******s to you) -I think their Rev Star stuff is badass.

It's not that I'm trying to sound like a fan boy - I just respect them and am speaking what I know to be true.

The right way to buy these guitars is
-search for the model you want
-don't worry about resale value
-don't go over your budget (after researching how much it should cost)
-mod like crazy
-do it again

I just wanna say that as an update to this very, very old thread
Animl got an EG112 and liked it well enough but somehow he wanted to move on and gave the Eg112 to me for only cost of shipping! What a great person.

It was a nice playing strat style guitar and it came to me with a handwound humbucker in the bridge position and no other pickups. I refinished it somewhat sloppily but it was a great project guitar. Put a ssl-6 in the neck and Custom 5 in the bridge and eventually sold it to a friend who was just starting out on guitar, so I just wanna say they are decent guitars with OK frets but not the most comfortable neck, the fret ends werent sharp but I could feel them there on some frets. Perfect for modding and butchering, but if you like high end guitars I see why some would say it's a POS. I would actually say that for the right price they are better than an affinity squier at least.
Mine was made later than the guy who got an alder one, mine was certainly 5 piece basswood with the type of grain you would want to cover up with a solid color.
