Yamaha RGX A2 wow!

Wattage

High Voltologist
I am not especially into "modern" guitars (though I do go crazy for space age 60's stuff) but I was blown away by this new Yamaha I came across yesterday at Guitarget.

It is essentially a hardtail, double hum Strat design but wholly different otherwise. It is a chambered featherweight ala Parker but it is a real guitar, super solid. 2 humbucking soapbars that have full adjustability in both rows and a fantastic neck. The knobs are slightly recessed which is a bit odd but they work well, and when the guitar is plugged in there are leds which light up and mark the position. It is all wrapped up in a frost white and satin chrome look that is really sharp. The tuners are quite cool but they might take a bit of getting used to. It sounds wonderful unamplified but there was a bit too much noise for me to get serious with it, I am definitely going to take another look at it next time I get a chance. Cheap too, under $500, Yamaha might have to tweak a few things on it but I think they have a winner.

I've looked at that thing several times. I like it. I don't know why. Perhaps because of the "high-tech" aspect of it. I've wondered how it felt, though. Thanks for the mini-review.

Does it use a battery for the LED's?

i'd give her a go ... seems cool ... those high precision tuners are pretty sweet ... aer the pup routes standard enough to take aftermarket P90s if so desired?

Looks cool, seen it before but not upclose. Aren't those LSR tuners, made (or at least he's heavilly involved) by Ed Roman? Heard some nice things about them others can't stand them. Apparently 40/1 ratio as opposed to the normal 12 or 18/1

Re: Yamaha RGX A2 wow!

Yamaha makes good guitars. They usually come with a nice set-up and are a good value. I played two of those white ones and they were both nice. I ran it though a Valvetronix and a Gibson 2x12 Goldtone Combo. Both were sweet guitars made in Yamahas Taiwan factory which is usually a cut above Yamahas from Korea or China. If I remember correctly, the body is a very light wood covered in with a hardwood cap (I think Mahagony???), so the guitar is actually wood. Nice pickups and a nice neck. But it's not for someone looking for traditional strat tone. I'd get it just as a fun guitar. But I'd wait for a sale. Yamaha's usually get blown out at sale prices a couple times a year. Yamaha acoustics are also a killer value.

Re: Yamaha RGX A2 wow!

Just a quick zap through an amp but time and background noise kind of rendered it a useless effort, sounded like a decent guitar but only some real playing time would tell. It appears the pups were standard soapbar size so I imagine you could mess with them if you wanted too. Yes there was a battery which I assume was for the LEDs because the guitar didn't appear to be active. I don't think there was a tone control on it, it appears both knobs were volume. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for those. The one I saw had been dropped on it's edge and had a decent chunk it it so I imagine it could be had cheaper but the high tech look really was let down by the big ding in it. It really felt nice, very comfortable.

have this guitar my self, and yep static noise is a problem, but it can be delt with quite easy, i simply opened the back and cut the 2 wires to light on it and made sure the wires/cords inside dont tutch one another or close to it on wire parts ( metal parts) that help alot, and be sure that the cord in it that go to the humbackers and bridge ( its a black one) is conected to the outgoing jack or the ground is gone and it will be buzzing alot, to even get it more quiet u can do as me, and connect the cable directly on to the guitar, and only use jack in amp, this is only for use on a guitar that aint being move alot btw, hope it helps

Re: Yamaha RGX A2 wow!

yeah it uses a 9 volt battery, but it dosent need it to be in to be used, its just for the fun, and the epic thing about it, is the weight, its simply one of the lightest guitars in the world :)

Re: Yamaha RGX A2 wow!

its quite cheep now anyway, i run mine on a line 6 spider 3 120w 2 x 10" speaker setup its a little metallic but its quite cleen even for a power amp and a light weight guitar like this, BIG BIIIIIG minus is the missing wammy thou

Re: Yamaha RGX A2 wow!

Has anyone else played this guitar and found it to be any good? My RGX121Z is literally the worst thing I've ever owned, which has really put me off Yamaha stuff.

Re: Yamaha RGX A2 wow!

Old thread . . . still a cool axe.

I remember these. Felt good and played well, but I think they blew it with the weird lines on the body, the model name on the body, and the odd sized pickups. Yamaha had a good chance to make a decent looking, innovative guitar and goofed it up. We all know Yamahas are good (i.e. Pacificas), they just look a bit off.

Re: Yamaha RGX A2 wow!

Yeah, I thought the lines were goofy too. like they were trying to make abstract art. Welcome to the forum! Cool avatar! Mick is awesome! Cant wait to hear his solo album he is talking about making once the crue rap up.

Spleenharvester, I have a Yamaha accou 12 string thats a piece of dung too. But, I dont write off the brand, I know they make good stuff. I got mine second hand and I think it was mistreated. Also, as with any brand, the low line stuff has alot of corners cut. Plus Im sure a stinker or two gets once in awhile
