Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

I'm really struggling as to whether I should go for an amp or guitar next. I'm pretty happy with everything I have right now, but I don't want to be lugging my Blackstar around everywhere (ht metal 60). I saw the THR10X and thought it might be a worthwhile buy for something to bring to band practice's, but I don't know if its worth buying that, or saving for a worthwhile head...

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

That's not going to be loud enough for band practice.

A 100W Peavey Bandit will shave about 25 lbs off that HT-60. They can be found used for $100-ish if you look hard enough if the issue is that you want to leave it somewhere.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

I have a regular THR 10...that amp is not really made for band practice (unless you mic it and use PA). However it's great amp for home use and recording, doubt you'll find anything better in this price range or higher for that matter.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

Look into the Tech21 Fly Rig 5. GREAT little unit for rehearsals and gigs...if you have a PA. I use mine all the time and find that it has been the most useful gear purchase I've made in a long time.

Is that going to sound like the THR10X High Gain or HT 60 Metal?

He may be going for certain tones here. :D

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

^Good point. I missed the whole "high gain" thing, and I would not recommend the Fly Rig for metal...

Seems like a weird design to not have it be used as a head through a cab or at least a preamp out.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

Yamaha has a Youtube channel, and whenever someone makes a comment like that^^ or a comment having to do with using it as a gigging amp on one of their vids, they reply with an answer like, "That's not what it was designed for."

I'd love an updated version with an external speaker jack.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

I just got the THR10C yesterday. I am extremely impressed with that amp. It's the best practice amp I've ever used. All of the amp models are really well dialed-in. I haven't played around with the editor yet, but I'm looking forward to that as well.

I believe the reason it doesn't have a speaker-out is because it's designed around and array of hi-fi speakers, not a guitar amp cabinet.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

I'm with Evan, I picked up a used THR10X and it is the coolest practice amp ever. I've never been a big fan of digital modeling but these sound great (Line 6 could learn something from these models). BUT, they are practice amps, they won't cut it for band practice. You also can't footswitch channels. If you can live with using one channel at a time, you might be able to run the headphone out to a PA and get a decent sound, but it definitely won't have enough volume on its own.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

I just picked one up. Ultimately coolest practice amp ever. Every single tone sounds great. Can't put my lp down. Recorded sounds are also impressive.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

I was all set to buy a THR10C based on Youtube demos but when I tried it in the shop it sounded terrible to me. In fact it sounded exactly like what it is - a tin can with speakers. I ended up with a Blackstar TVP15 which is great for practice and also quite giggable - the True Valve Power actually works as this is easily the loudest 15w s/s amp I've come across. Quite shockingly loud but also sounds very good at kitchen/not annoying everyone in the house volumes.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

I recently bought a used 10C and love it. OK so t doesn't sound like my big amps but then I didn't expect it to, then again I didn't really expect it to clean up so well with guitar volume either. It is just a practise/ recording tool and a good one at that.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

It runs on AA battery too right? Fun little gadget to have around, there are alot of options out there now for practice needs, more compact too but this thing does look cool to have in the living room compared to most other practice amps that can take up more space.

I recently checked out a similar offering from vox that looks like a stereo cassette player with two speakers, that sounded horrible for even cleans.

Funny, presently Yamaha is the parent company of L6. They came out with their own amp recently, L6 Amplifi, i think its based around the principal of FRFR speakers like THR series. Not sure if its been a hit for them.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

The 10x was the single most useful piece of gear that I have ever bought. I use it for smaller band practice (electric drum kit), daily practice, recording, and little solo performances with backing tracks. The coolest thing is that it responds so much like a tube amp that overdrives sound amazing, and it's just very dynamic.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

If it has a headphone out and made for FR speakers, the Alesis Transactive Wireless Bluetooth PA plus one of the Yamaha TR10 models would make for a good combo loud enough for small gigs. Both are battery powered too. I have an Alesis Transactive and use it with my ipad running bias amps for just this purpose.

Re: Yamaha THR10X: worth it?

Does it have a footswitch to go from clean to brutal? This is a selling point for me right now
