yet another strat advice thread

I know this horse has been beaten sooo many times but

I just picked up a hardtail strat type guitar with Fralin Blues with a baseplate. I like the airiness of the middle and neck but the bridge is less gutsy than I prefer and the output is considerably lower across the board than my other strat which has a custom wound bridge "tele for a strat" with alnico II magnets at 7.5K from the Duncan user group day and carvin AP11's in the middle and neck.

I do prefer the bigger tele type tone from the bridge pickup and would like a bit more volume than what I'm getting while still sounding like a traditional strat in the other settings. What would you guys suggest?

Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I always thought the Invader was perhaps just a tiny bit more tear-the-flesh-off-your-face-like than strat-like.

Off the shelf i'd go with the Twangbanger. If you don't mind calling the custom shop, ask them to wind you the bridge pickup out of the Musicman Albert Lee sig guitar. I have the full set in my strat and I love it to bits. I like it even more than my friend's 57 strat with Antiquity I pickups.

Duncan Twangbanger...or Lindy Fralin Steel Pole 43.

I have a Strat with Fralin Vintage Hots and I use the Steel Pole 43 as the bridge pickup. Plenty of output and much of the tone of a P-90.

Great pickup!

With the SP-43 you'll also have humcancelling when combined with your Fralin middle pickup.

I don't know that will have humcancelling with the Twangbanger...in fact, it might even be out of phase with the Fralins.

But Lew, would there be a huge volume difference between the steel pole 43and the blues specials? And would I still get some quack in the 2 position?

Nope. Wouldn't be a huge diff at all. The SP43 would sound very balanced with the Blues Specials. I use it with Vintage Hots which are not quite as strong as your Blues Specials. My buddy AJ uses the SP43 with a pair of Duncan SSL-1's. In both cases the SP43 sounds wonderful. STRATDELUXER47 also uses the SP43 and he seems to be as happy with it as we are. The SP43 sounds great when the combined with the middle pickup...still gets that classic "quack" as some refer to it. Truthfully, the Twangbanger is louder than the SP43 and gets less "quack" when combined with the middle pickup than the SP43, IMO...although it's a killer pickup too...especially for soloing. :) Lew
