yet another thread about my unfinished strat

i went to radioshack today, and i got some caps, and some wire. what i got is 3 different types of capacitors (ceramic disc, metalized- film, and polyester film) each .01uF. are any of these unsuitable for a tone circuit on my guitar, and which one will be better for that app?

the wires i got are plain old Hook- up wire, 3 different colors. they are rated at 300 volts, 18 guage and are unshielded. are these suitable?

That's what I used when I rewired one of my guitars and they work fine. Shielded cable from the jack to the pots is a good idea though. As for the caps, metal film or polyester film will work, try a .047uF or .022uF cap on the tone control and anything in between. The numbers on the caps will be 473 or 223. Those are the most common but you can use what suits your taste. Ceramic disk will work but I only use those in treble bleed mods on the volume pot.

Shielded cable from the jack to the pots is a good idea though.

Well, yes and no. You can shield them pretty good in the guitar by shielding your guitar cavity really well (see www.guitarnuts.com for the 'Quieting the Beast' mod) but they won't be totally shielded themselves. If you don't have any, don't worry about it right now. It can always be changed later on.

You can get shielded cable from Radio Shack also. 18 guage seems a bit heavy. 24 or 22 guage will work fine. I once shielded my wires by wrapping heavy aluminum foils around them and then connected the aluminum foil to ground. It looks ugly but it works.

the shielded cable there was s[peaker cables with the 2 cables together. it was way too big.

Find a cool local guitar shop and they've given me sheilded wire.

Get the audio cables, 24 guage ones, 2 wires and shielded. I'd just picked up 50' from Radio Shack today for $8.75
