Yet Another Vintage Modern review!!

Dropped into my local GC to get strings and GraphitAll and decided to check out the Vintage Modern. They had a 50W head with 4X12 bottom (they didn;t have a combo in). Plugged in with a '61 LP/SG reissue which was missing the high E string (big surprise at GC:banghead:). After monkeying around with the controls I finally settled on the following:

Reverb: 12pm
Master Volume: 9:30am
Presence: 3-6pm
Bass: 3pm
Mid: 6pm
Treble: 3-6pm
Detail: 6pm
Body: 12pm
Dynamic switch:Low
Mid Boost: on

Before settling on these settings, the amp sounded kinda muddy, but the grind was good. Once I got to these settings, the amp really opened up. Very nice old Marshall tone, even at moderate volumes. Didn't open it up volum-wise, but was really happy. I had the treble up about all the way (& I'm not big on treble), because the amp still needed a bit more. Overall, the distorted sound was really nice and not over the top unless you set the "Dynamic" switch to high, then it's somewhat more sizzly. The amp is, to my ears fat and creamy sounding and articulate as well. Didn't try the clean setting, due to lack of time.

If the 2X12 combo sounds as good, I'm selling a couple of things and getting one ASAP.

Re: Yet Another Vintage Modern review!!

It is a nice amp, but I found it to be muddy also. I also felt it really didn't have the versatilty I thought it would......... I wanted one bad and then I was somewhat disapointed, so I bought a Komet 60 instead. That hurt the pocketbook a bit more, but the amp is great!

BTW what is GraphitAll

Oh. Its like nutsause....... cool I'll have to try some

Re: Yet Another Vintage Modern review!!

the thing about that amp that gets me is they made the low/hi foot switchable but there is such a boost that it doesnt work for rhythm/lead or clean/dirty

Dave,

I haven't used it yet, but the GraphitAll is a lot cheaper ($4.00 vs $15.00) and was developed by Rene` Martinez, who used to do work for SRV.

Jeremy,

I didn't use the foot switch, but just switching between hi/lo on the amp yielded a huge boost like you said. Wasn't crazy about that, but I'll still look into the combo. Just loved the tone once I got it tweaked. I'd like to hear it cranked to really see what it can do.

i too thought the tone was pretty nice. i played it pretty loud and i thought it sounded pretty **** nice

Re: Yet Another Vintage Modern review!!

Jeff, what do you think would happen if the controls were set to am instead of pm? :laugh2: Just messin' with ya.

What is 6pm anyway? That would put the dial pointer straight down and it can't do that. Do you mean 1 o'clock (6 on the dial)?

I played the SRV Strat through it and had to turn the treble down. I didn't play any other guitars through it but from what you said about, it appears this monster really shows the differences between guitars.

Erik,

6pm is dimed. Probably should have just said that. Sorry. AM/PM just seemed to do it for me visually. Nice to hear that each guitar's character comes out.

Ok, I got ya. Did you start with all the EQ knobs at noon? That's the best way to dial that in, just like the old ones. The SRV through it wasn't muddy at all, very chimey and clear. That amp sounds killer with single-coils.

I didn't start with the controls at noon (which is a great idea). I kinda went with what works on my current amp (Crate VC5212) and went from there. Nice to hear it sounds so good with single coils. Humbuckers can be muddy anyway, so it may not be the amp I was having a problem with initially, but the way the guitar was setup.
