YJM Fury pickup height adjust

Ok so I have a strat and installed the preloaded YJM Fury pre-loaded pickguard. The pups are awesome but I can't seem to nail down the proper height, and find myself constantly tweaking them. Any tips on the best height setup for these specific pickups? I look at pictures and videos of Malmsteen as well as other players and some seem to have them slammed down to the pickguard and others seem to have them raised a fair amount. I'm looking for an awesome distorted tone that also cleans up nice and chimey. I'm playing through a Blackstar HT-20 that I boost with a tubescreamer.

Thanks!

Re: YJM Fury pickup height adjust

On a Strat I ALWAYS dial in the neck pickup first , beginning with the wound strings, and its usually quite low.
Unusually I set my mid single height the same distance that my neck is from the scratchplate.
The reason for this is I find it gives the best quack tones.

Finally I set my bridge to give me my lead tone and again unlike most, I tend to not angle my pickups because it keeps the plain strings sounding warmer.

I would start with setting the pickups low then medium and then high and no closer than 1/8 of an inch on low E and 1/16 on high E and go from there and you don't want the string's fretting on the pickups.. It also depends on the "magnet strength" of the pickup, meaning the lower strength the higher the pickup need's to be vice versa..

From my Seymourised 1996 MIM Tex-Mex HSS Stratocaster, polepiece to bottom of open string;

STK-10n = 4.50mm (low E), 4.25mm (high E)

SSL-52 = 4.25mm (low E), 4.25mm (high E)

STK-10b = 3.25mm (low E), 4.00mm (high E)

These statistics are offered as a guide. Use them only as a starting point. Note, for example, that the magnet length stagger pattern of my middle pickup will not be identical to an STK-10n/c. Also, the SSL-52 appears to have a thicker layer of lacquer on the magnet. Finally, my particular guitar features a 9.5" fingerboard radius.

I'm lowering mine to about a 1/4" (tallest magnet) below the strings.
