You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Dave Gilmour's collection for me. I'd keep a few choice pieces and give the rest away. What the heck would I do with so many guitars anyway? I'd rather have the good vibes/karma that comes from being generous. So yeah, spending the next few years handing out classic guitars to somebody who really deserves one but doesn't have one. That would make me more happy than a thousand guitars.

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Hmmm... Either Gilmour's skills + The Black Strat or BFG's skills + Pearly (or if possible a pinstriped Gretsch Jupiter Thunderbird and a fuzzy Explorer).

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Tough one. Seeing as I've never been a guy that likes having too many guitars, I think id rather have the skill....but who's skill is the question.....

I think id take Warren Demartini's skill and take his charvel snakeskin guitar

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

I don't really lust for any guitars, regardless of who owned them. Neither do i lust for anyone elses' skills ... I'm happy enough to stand on my own feet and try to find my own way after forty years of making my own noises.

So ... I'd take the bottle and the Jimi-genie down to the peace and quiet of the river (at dusk would be good, we might get to see a platypus), maybe have a beer or something green (or both) and talk about anything but guitars, until he had to be going. I'd also give him a Bjork album so he could have music without guitars in it.

I just figure poor old genie could use a brief rest from his task. Besides, it's nice to not need stuff and to try to be able to give something back sometimes instead.

I hope the Jimi-genie gives the skills to some poor disabled kid with a vision in a third-world country.

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Actually took the time and thought long and hard about it.

I'd take the skills which I'd use as a base to further my own identity as a guitarist.
With that said, I tried to think whose skills I'd find compatible and complementing mine and I think the answer would be the late and great Criss Oliva from Savatage. Not only he had chops like nobody's business but his playing had HEART which in the end matters more to me than being a pentatonic acrobat... I wouldn't even find his favorite ESP-turned-Jackson guitar an absolute must (although it wouldn't have hurt :D)

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Nice gesture of Crusty's to give the Jimi genie a little rest and share a beer with him.

Impressive range of answers thus far and a healthy respect for each other's hypothetical differences.

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Can I ask for money so that I could build a guitar that I actually want and pass on the skills?

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Easy I would take the skills and one guitar BUT I don't know who's skills I would want.

It would be either Guthrie Govan, Alex Hutchings, or Tommy Emanuel. Don't care which guitar they give me.

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Rick Nielson's guitar collection, he has multiple 59 LP's as the tip of the iceberg. I would end up wealthy selling a few as well.

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Paul Gilbert's skill and an Ibanez PGM401 hardtail. He's just one of those players that has such a huge palette at his disposal. Of all of the 80's shredders, he stands out to me. The melody, the phrasing, the rhythm, the accuracy. He has fun at what he does and it shows.

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Easy choice for me. I'd take the entire guitar collection of Keith Richards. I already play as well as I need to (i.e. being any better wouldn't really help me in any substantive way), and the monetary value of the collection would mean that I'd never have to work again. What good is talent if you're so rich you never have to use it to make a living?

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

If you've ever seen LA session player Carl Verheyen's ridiculous skill set, you'd know why I chose him.
He's got a lot of nice guitars, so I'd probably choose one of his vintage Gibson jazz boxes since they're expensive and I'd be picking up the skills necessary to do an instrument like that justice.

I'd much rather take the skills, especially considering I'd maintain my current skills and approach to playing.

The tough part of my decision would be deciding whose skills to acquire, Albert Lee (for the country licks) or Jimmy Herring (for his insane theory knowledge). I think in the end, though, I'd probably go with Guthrie Trapp, since he's got quite a bit of both sides.

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

Wow, loaded question.. Id have to go with skills tho, cuz I want to MAKE beautiful music so bad it pains me inside and I cant seem to get past beginner skillset. Id say Jimmy Page's skills as he had great riffs on his own but also as a session musician. Plus, I wouldnt complain with getting his number 1 LP.

I do love Slash's collection in that photo (and Bonamassa's and Nielson's) but all those guitars would still sound like suck if it was just me.
KeeperSOS, Chriss Oliva? Good one! Also liked the Warren D and Paul Gilbert ones too. Warren has great chops and Gilbert can play anything.

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

I would probably take Joe Bonamassa's guitar collection. Having some freaky skills would make me feel obligated to a) practice more than I do and b) actually create some new music, neither of which I am particularly inclined to do right now so I think it would just be stressful. The stack of guitars would be great fun, though! The best part being that there are so many that I could sell/trade until I actually got all the axes I really want!

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

This is an easy one for me.

I want Joe Bonamassa's collection - I'd quit my day job, and sell it off piece by piece over the course of my life.

I honestly have zero interest in getting many more guitars or being a better guitarist. I do, however, have a great deal of interest in not having to work a 9-to-5 ever again, so if Joe's guitar collection can make that happen for me, I'm down.

Sorry if I subverted the intent of the question.

Re: You Find A Bottle On The Beach....

i'd be happy with a lesson or two from Jimi, another good strat, and a date with Karen Carpenter/
