Although I don't like one trick ponies at all, I voted single channel amp. I'd throw a couple of very different sounding overdrive pedals in front of it though, to compensate for its shortcomings in versatility. I prefer channel switching amps, but I would never buy one that has at least a great sounding clean channel, a good mild drive channel and a good high gain channel that rocks but will also 'do' metal if it has to.
