of the two i think i'd go cherry...however i'd just stain it with a bit of black stain and get it to a dark grey shade myself as pac said.

dani, I will have to scan a pic and post it for you...it is from a 1963 Fender catalog and there is a mahogany telecaster...plain as day...it looks cool!!!

A little off topic I know but, it seems everyone is using the kind of template for guitar make over display. Did you find tehm on the web, or is it something that goes around the forum?

By the way, I voted natural. Personally I would go with the traditional pickguard shape. But that only my opinion...

If your body is mahogany, wouldn't the "natural" be considerably darker than that?

yup. both guitars were way darker. it somehow got bleached a tad when i imported it to the forum.

as expected, its really difficult to conclude which color to go for.

15 - heritage cherry vs
11 - natural vs
4 - others

very close fight for the cherry and natural.

i vote other a friend of mine had one he built that had the same kind of body and he put walnut stain on it and it looked pretty cool he worked for a guitar company and said thats what they do for the natural backs of guitars like les pauls.

now that's a thought man-in-moon. its always easier to stain wood darker than its original color unless bleaching is an option.
