Your collection - bought new vs 2nd hand vs discounted

I was looking at my axes the other day *cough*staring at them*cough* and realized that, out of all of them, the only one I bought new and at full price was my cheap acoustic. Everything else was either discounted or 2nd hand. I've also been lusting after this Les Paul on Sweetwater but everytime I've asked for a discount, I get a flat 'no' :( So that's stopped me from pulling the trigger.

How bout you guys? New and full price vs 2nd hand vs discounted?

I have 8 basses and 8 guitars. I bought two of the basses new, a ‘73 Rick and an ‘87 Ibanez. Everything else is used, or I built myself (5 basses, 3 guitars). I had a lot more that I sold...

Re: Your collection - bought new vs 2nd hand vs discounted

I have an almost depressingly large collection of self made instruments......so you could say they are both new and full priced (as thats how I buy the parts), but discounted too as I'm not paying luthier prices on the build.

Re: Your collection - bought new vs 2nd hand vs discounted

New new? Maybe three...

Discounted like B stock etc...a few

The rest, shrewd used buys. I have at least a Les Paul, and a fe others you'd swear were new.

Re: Your collection - bought new vs 2nd hand vs discounted

What I have now? 1 new, 3 made myself, 2 used. My bass was new.

Over the years, I've bought way more used guitars than new, maybe 3 or 4 new in total.

Re: Your collection - bought new vs 2nd hand vs discounted

Only thing I've ever bought new was my bass. Too many nice guitars owned by idiots to convince myself to pay full price, plus you don't get the pain of being the first to scratch something.

Re: Your collection - bought new vs 2nd hand vs discounted

Since I started in the mid-70's I've owned hundreds of guitars, basses, and other string instruments. The massive majority were purchased used, some I built myself, and nearly all were modded to some extent. I've only bought 4 brand new instruments - in the 80's I bought a spanking new Ibanez Destroyer bass when they came out (medium scale in orange), a white Ibanez Paul Gilbert Mikro, a cheap Luna acoustic I felt sorry for (it was unsold almost 2 years). It played great and sounded nice - even for a cheap guitar it had a solid top. Modded it into a dulcitar (I can change it back), and most recently - an Oscar Schmidt goldtop Les Paul copy, which plays fantastic and sounded good even before I installed a set of Pearly Gates in zebra.

Interesting....

At the peak I had 18 guitars. (:wrf:) Clearing them out now because that’s ridiculous when I only play a handful.

New - 10%
New, discounted (like clearance, 20%, etc.) - 15%
Used - 75%

Re: Your collection - bought new vs 2nd hand vs discounted

~20% used
~80% "vintage" ---if you use a somewhat looser, before-my-time, couldn't have bought it new if I wanted to definition

Damn it! You made me remember. I bought my bass new in Japan in 04.

13 guitars. One used, an epi l.p special my wife got for me at a garage sale.
The 14th on it's way. New.
I like to be the one who delusters.
Ooooopps lies. 2 used, the above epi and my Ibanez Arz.

Re: Your collection - bought new vs 2nd hand vs discounted

I have never bought a single pic in my entire tenure of being a guitar player. All of them have been gifts, hand made, or shameless stolen.

As for guitars? I'm about 33%/33%/33% between new, used, and builds. My only stock guitar is an Epi ES-175 Premium.

I'm another who has only bought my bass new. Everything else is second or third hand.

Which begs the bigger question: are we here all bargain-hunters and/or cheapazzes who shop for ex-fleet vehicles and buy tires on clearance only too (like me)? Or does the new stuff just not appeal to us from a quality/interesting-ness perspective (also true for me, btw)?

Re: Your collection - bought new vs 2nd hand vs discounted

I have 11 guitars....the only one I bought brand new was my Les Paul. I got it on Black Friday so there was a decent discount there. Plus I traded in every last piece of gear I could scrounge up and got about another $500 off.
