Your delay/echo unit.

So folks, what dealy(s) / echo units, do you use, and who feel they can not get their tone without one ?

Right now i have a DE7 (fantastic vintage analog tape delay tone - on a budget), but would like to get an analog one with even a better tube-driven tape delay tone . . .

. . . and "NO" - i CANNOT afford a Fulltone Tape-echo ($1000.00)

Here is mine - as if you guys do not know how a DE7 looks like :

I use mine for short slapback tones ala, Rockabilly and Psychobilly !

Re: Your delay/echo unit.

I have a pair of Rocktron Short-Timers. Together they give me two presets which is generally enough. I don't need one of the multi-preset programmable units.

I would caution you against spending big bucks on high-end delays. I don't think many people can hear the subtle differences (especially the audience). I started with a (now vintage) MXR Analog Delay back around 1980, then a small Boss analog, then Boss digital stompboxes after that. I did hear a difference between the analog delays and the digitals - the digitals were brighter and more in-your-face, sometimes to the point of obscuring the dry signal.

However, many modern digital delays (including the Short Timer) are built to imitate the less-than-perfect fidelity of the older analogs. They do it so well that spending big bucks for a vintage or boutique analog delay isn't worth it (IMO). True analog delays are a thing of the past - the chips are difficult if not impossible to obtain, and they are noisy. Tape is even worse (from a noise/hassle/expense point of view) for the marginal increase in tone/vibe/mojo you will obtain. My Short Timers do what I want them to, and cost me ~$52 US for the pair (eBay). Spend your hard earned mojo money on something that will make a difference.

Oh, and to answer your question... I can't get my "sound" without a delay. I was big into Andy Summers back in the Police, and also the Edge. For stuff like that, a delay is required - it's an actual part of the music. I usually have one delay set up for those sort of obvious, rhythmic repeats, and the other set for generic echo or slapback effects.

Re: Your delay/echo unit.

The reason analouge delays sound like they do....is because BBD chips are noisy,
they have a (very)small bandwidth, so the delays where filtered alot, you can clock the chips for less noise and increased bandwidth, but then it will be extremely expensive, just to stuff in that many chips to anything beyond a few 100ms!
So take a normal digital chip and use the same filtering, and I will bet that quite a few would never notice anything!
What I look for in delays is functionality, and all of my setups are quite on the clear side, so the sound has to be working too!

Re: Your delay/echo unit.

i use a line6 delay- i use it for not just delay, but looping. I like the 3 presets, the tap tempo, the fact that you can get those analog-y spaceship sounds and assign any or all parameters to an expression pedal.

^ one of these is on my list.

Currently, I use the built in delay and echo functions in a Behringer V-Amp2 and Korg AX100G. Between the two, it keeps me pretty happy for living room jamming.

Beautifull pedal board - one of the neatest ones i've seen in years !!!

. . . and yes, i hear you, about those super expensive "booteek-delays", and the audience listenning !

They (especially the woman) look more at your "stage-precence" than anything else !!!

They reason i got the DE7, is that a good friend said; "if you can not afford the mother of all delays, MOOG DELAY, the second best is the DE7 !"

I am VERY happy with this unit, make no mistake !
I just thought there might be something better/analog/more versitile/more vintage sounding for a few dollars more (?)

Re: Your delay/echo unit.

I use a Boss DD20 and I'm reeeeeally happy with it. That pedal is a big part of my sound... it's quite addictive. It's not as easy to use as a Line 6 DL4, but I feel the tone preservation is better as is the construction.

Re: Your delay/echo unit.

I've got a Diamond Memory Lane that is plain badass....

Also have a very nice Donnerbox Spatial Delay.

H&K Replex is nice too, but big. And compared to the Memory Lane, it sounds like a toy !

Re: Your delay/echo unit.

I have a Boss DD-20 and a DigiTech DigiDelay. They are quite different from each other in terms of sound quality, but they are both awesome. I try to keep the effect level low in the mix, but it depends on the sound I am going for. I don't have one, but I've always liked that Ibanez, also.

Re: Your delay/echo unit.

As satisfied as I am with my Short Timers, of all the delays mentioned so far in this thread, I'd really like to have Rid's Space Echo 201. Pretty much the ultimate tape delay, before they went the way of the Dodo.

Better yet, the 301 rack-mount version with built-in chorus.

Someone on eBay is selling Space Echo refrigerator magnets. If they weren't in the UK, I'd buy one in a second.

Re: Your delay/echo unit.

Also used to have a Yamaha E1005 analouge delay
Echoplex ss version
Ibanez DML 10
Ibanez DDL10
Boss DM-2 and 3
TC-2290
Boss DD-2-3-5
Some obscure analouge delay, very short 300ms..forgot the name right now lol
I have had way too many effects:D
