Your fav non-TS9/808 based overdrive is ?

I don't boost much but when I do I like these. Another pedal I really like but falls into the typical TS type is the Ibanez/Vemuram TSV808 pedal. Really nice pedal but hard to find and pricey.

I like the Lovepedal HiVolt. The black version is medium-to-high gain, the Ruby is low-to-medium gain.
Active 3-band tone controls; they don't interact with each other so it's easy to dial in your sound.
Dynamic & amplike, great volume-knob cleanup for the amount of gain it delivers.
Big, tight lows if you want them. Gives my TWE-1 a run for its money.
Around $100 used.

Would like to re-try the Dist Plus.

I do have an MXR Dist III . . . would you know how different / similar they might be ?

The distortion iii is weird, says distortion but much more of an overdrive. I've AB'd with my tube screamer clone (east river drive) and they have a similar sound, down to EQ, texture, and gain range. The east river has a slighty brighter smoother sound but splitting hairs here. They sound pretty good stacked, like two tube screamers.

I haven't owned the distortion+ but am pretty sure they have a little harder clipping sound and will sound different enough that you could try it

My fav, can sound a little edgy and fizzy but plenty manageable, and preserves much bass compared to tube screamer is the Blues Driver
It works pretty well with volume controls to clean up, and the light dirt tones on it are what I use a lot for "clean tones". Into a fender I find this pedal kind of scooped (pedal actually has a little preset hardwired fender 60s style tone stack) but into anything with mids I find the blues driver nice and balanced

I had an OCD based pedal that didn't cut a lot of bass

The forza looks really cool to me and I would try it if I were in the market. Looks really versatile.

Fulltone OCD used to be my go-to overdrive, especially when used alongside my TS clone or Big Muff clone. That changed last week when I found the Vick Audio Tree of Life OD.

This thing is a mix of a Zen Drive and the OCD circuits and it's a game changer.

Not affiliated with them in any way but highly recommend the Tree of Life and the Violet Ram's Head.

The Zen Drive is an interesting one. To me, it seems closer to a Klon with maybe more gain. It is really dynamic, though, and doesn't sound TS-y.

The Visual Sound Route 808 is great! I like mine a lot.

That actually is a Tube Screamer clone, and a really good one at that. Too bad they stopped making it. Can still have it as part of the Route 66 or the Jekyll and Hyde.

I misread the question. Sorry. Yes the Visual Sound Route 808 is my favorite Tubescreamer clone.

But the Hermida Dover Drive is my favorite overdrive for Eric Johnson style violin tones. It sounds like his Fuzzface / Tube Driver rig all in one pedal.

And my other is of course the Klon. I have a couple of the Bill Finnigan built Klon KTR pedals that Bill says sound identical to his original Klon and use the same "secret" componants. Not a secret anymore of course.

I use a bogner blue and a rat set lowish/ride the volume for low gain tones.

I did an a/b between the blue and a ts9 and the blue can get super close to a ts9 when the switches are set right. Its pretty radical and somewhat pointless though.

The vfe focus is another good boost without any clipping stages.
It has a huge output range and controls for both the high and low filters, as well as toggles for steep or shallow curves on the roll-offs.
Also has a wet/dry mix knob but I always just run it at max.

This thing is also an amazing booster for other gain pedals.

Klones aren't really TS-based, so add those to the pile. Mine is one I built from BYOC.

The Boss BD-2 is an awesome circuit. It does everything from clean boost to light OD all the way up to some pretty full on distortion. I've been using mine for nearly 20 years and love it.

My forever OD pedal is an Xotic BB Preamp, the original orange non-comp, non-plus version. While at its core, it is TS based, Xotic have turned it into something else. Active EQ lets you dial out the TS hump if you want. Also, it's a lot more dynamic than a TS or SD-1, it's less compressed, and retains the pick attack, Chunky.

The Ibanez 808/TS9 is hugely popular . . . every where.

But who here likes/prefers a non 808/TS9 based overdrive ?

Any suggestions for a sub $150 OD that retains the low end . . . or actually increase the low end (in a good way) ?

FWIW I bought a JRockett Archer Ikon for $130, which supposedly is the same circuit, including the diodes and op amp, of the $4500 Klon Centaur it's a copy of. Definitely non-TS9 based. I use it to balance Fender guitar levels against Gibsons without having to change my amp settings.

Not my favorite (I never tried it)... But did anyone tried the finnish Sweet Honey Overdrive by Mad Professor ? (not to be confused with a canadian stompbox with a similar name).
It s supposed to be extremely responsive to pick dynamics. There is the original version and a deluxe one.

lets remember the klon was sold for $350 from bill or whatever, the stupid prices are the internets fault. the germanium archer is on my short list of toys i want
