The Official Green Overdrive Thread

Re: The Official Green Overdrive Thread

LOL, I actually bought two more “Green Drives” last night (a Maxon OD-9+& another MIJ TS-9 reissue) both for the purposes of modifying and then reselling, but I still kinda want to buy one of these just to keep & have in my collection....

I’ll also be grabbing one of the new red & black 40th Anniversary TS-808’s very soon, another one that’s going to look great on my wall. LOL....

Re: The Official Green Overdrive Thread

Sean (Lovepedal) posted that he's working on another version of Valve Reamer that's voiced just like an 808. I bet it'll be green.

Has anyone tried the Voodoo labs "Sparkle Drive"?
It's basically an 808 circuit with a clean boost you blend in (or out). I can see how that could come in really handy, but I've never seen or heard one. (And the pedal isn't green, so...)

I used to have one of those. They’re awesome.

Re: The Official Green Overdrive Thread

FWIW, I just got a little adapter to run my Duncan 805 at 18V. If anyone's curious, the difference is very subtle, but there seems to be a bit less congestion in the low mids, and a bit more airy top-end. Very subtle, but worth it, IMO.

Never tried this- now I am curious. Thanks for the tip!

I'm not positive, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Maxon 820 is an 808 wired to run at 18V for better headroom.

I’m a big fan of trying ODs at 18v. It started because I had a spare 18v output in a power supply :) I currently run my Eclipse at 18v and I’m really happy.

It's cool because it's something that can't quite be dialed in just using the controls. Like I said, subtle, but at least worth a try, IMO. :)

The Maxon OD820 does run at 18V, but it's not just an 808. There is other differences as well such as the gain knob having a dual function blending more clean signal the more you turn it counter clockwise.

Too bad not all of them can be run at 18V. I'd love to try my TS808 at 18V, but I'm afraid I might fry it.

MXR Classic OD! (AKA the MXR "GT-OD" - it is literally the same pcb in a different enclosure.)

This thing is AWESOME. I have owned it a couple months so it is past the honeymoon phase and if it died tomorrow I would get another one asap.

It does everything a Tube Screamer is supposed to do with plenty of volume on tap but sounds throaty and full rather than thin and nasally and it is true bypass. (I do not like buffers.) Great range on the tone knob. And...dirt cheap! The Big Chain music stores they were made for blew them out for $29 or $39 toward the end so they sell for $30-40 used all day long. I have the pearl white version.
Inside is a hidden switch that turns it into the Zack Wilde OD (again, same pcb but different enclosure) which is basically an SD-1 without the buffers. Best. TS. Ever.

Disclaimer: I have not tried the Duncan 805 so I am willing to amend that to "Best TS for under a hundy"

Re: The Official Green Overdrive Thread

3 years later, and I still reach for my 805 whenever I even think about using any of my TS pedals (TS5, TS7, Bad Monkey, BYOC Overdrive II).

Is that the one you got from me Dave? If so I just could not gel with it. Low end just muddied up for me, no matter how I set the pedal. Could of been the combo of my amp and guitar, not sure. Upper mids to highs sounded good but the lows and lower mids, just didnt work.

Very happy its working for you and getting the love it deserves.

Re: The Official Green Overdrive Thread

I think Im mildly psychotic about pedals here lately, along with asking about green pedal options, Ive asked about fuzz pedals and chorus pedals and still cant decide which to get.

Yes it is! I LOVE that thing. With my amp it sounds great. I did put a piece of masking tape over that d*mn blue LED though - that thing was blinding.

Re: The Official Green Overdrive Thread

Awesome, glad it worked out for you. Yes that blue light is rather bright. Have a couple other MXR pedals that are the same way

Re: The Official Green Overdrive Thread

I like my Bad Monkey, but I do wish it had more of a mid snarl. Nice to have low and high controls.

Re: The Official Green Overdrive Thread

I picked up a Way Huge Green Rhino mkIV recently. The mkIV has a switch to bypass the extra bass and mids knobs so you get the standard tube screamer sound. Feels like it has a just a hair more gain on tap than a standard TS9. I'm pretty much just a bedroom player now, so the extra bass and mid controls are nice for getting a beefier sound around the house. Maybe I'd like the standard bass cut and mid hump if I were playing somewhere live.

Re: The Official Green Overdrive Thread

Keep the reviews on those Green-style OD's coming! I know there are more and more all the time!!!!!
