right now mine is Jack Lawrences tone in The Dead Weather

Re: Your favorite Bass tone (include clip)

This guy and his unique Wal Pro fretless bass. Some of this track is reversed but the sound is always unmistakably Mick Karn.

Re: Your favorite Bass tone (include clip)

In some ways similar to Mick Karn, I do rather like Pino Palladino's work with Paul Young.

Here's a great thread from a year ago on the same topic --- not busting on you because I know Search is broken right now - sharing because there's tons of great stuff in there - 66 posts!

Now, my update:
_____

John Baizley's RIDICULOUS bass tone on Baroness' "Yellow & Green."

God damn.

Hail Satan!

_____

Nathan East on Daft Punk's latest, "Random Access Memories."

So much energy in the tone. Very active tone.

_____

And of course,

Mine is from an emo band called Spitalfield. You will probably all hate the music, but man oh man is the bass tone SO SO there.

Anybody else dig this really really fat tone with a little bit of grind?

Re: Your favorite Bass tone (include clip)

You can say about this band whatever you want, but it always has nice pressure on the bass.

+1 to I-6 for the old thread, which I commented on. To which I add...

Joe Osborn, 60's and 70's session monster (still working today).

Fretted or fretless?
I have a favorite of each.
Fretted, listen at 0:36 to 2:00:

I also loved Mike Inez's live bass tone when I saw Alice In Chains live a couple of months ago. It was sort of similar - lots of growl and a touch of overdrive.

My holy graille fretless tone:

I can get in the ballpark with my Ibanez Gary Willis sig bass. I'd love a big-buck Pedulla or Zon to nail this kind of tone.

Re: Your favorite Bass tone (include clip)

That Paul Young song has great bass tone.
Also from way back, not my favourite of his songs but great bass tone.

Also from the 80s, much more subtle but nice bass tone.

I heard Journey´s Don´t Stop Believing on the radio the other day and every time I hear it I think the bass sounds really great for the song (i.e. not the type of tone I would generally be chasing for bass but it works exceptionally in that song, especially one the song gets going and there´s what sounds to me like chorus that´s really adding to the tone).

More recent stuff that comes to mind generally has great bass lines but not so much stand out great tone.

BTW uopt what´s the link, I just a white box?

I agree. The Moody Blues' "In Your Wildest Dreams" is another example. Cool Steinberger bass tone, but not the right tone for just every song.

I love the bass tone in George Baker Selection - Little Green Bag
