Your favorite cheap high gain tube amp

Re: Your favorite cheap high gain tube amp

Dammit, that's not helping. That Hovercraft has some sick doom tones... I was looking for tighter, like the sound of duct tape being ripped off of a roll, but that Dwarvenaut sounds like a wolf being pulled through its own bunghole. I love it.

Re: Your favorite cheap high gain tube amp

lots of different versions of the Dwarvenaut too. Anything from uberstoner Sunn to a Laney Supergroup "ultramarshall" I think he called it. He also did a voicing that sounded like a Boss HM2. Entombed without the pedals.

Hand wired and built in Portland by a crazy guy who eats some of the worst meals I've ever seen on Facebook.

I am doing everything in my power not to buy one.

Re: Your favorite cheap high gain tube amp

A while back I saw a used Peavey Triple X at a local Sam Ash for about $400 bucks. I don't know how common it is to find them at that price, but I would look into it.

Re: Your favorite cheap high gain tube amp

OK, did not know that !

So dies the Randall T2HL have more gain ?

Is that the silver faced one? I haven't tried that one, but I did have one of the black faced T2s a while back. That one would work just fine for high gain. The V2/VMax ones are just okay.

YUP, referring to the black faced models.

Hey, that is actually a decent option, IF, money is an issue.

At the very least, this thing CAN do High Gain.

Re: Your favorite cheap high gain tube amp

The Spider Valve stuff is ok, but I want none of the digital stuff in it. I want to be able to open this thing up and solder on it if I feel the need.

Re: Your favorite cheap high gain tube amp

My local GC got in an old 900DR 2x12 combo..100 watter. It's under 6 bills in decent, but definitely used shape. Probably can talk em down a bit. If it had been a 50w, I might have pulled out the plastic.

Re: Your favorite cheap high gain tube amp

It's not uber high gain but I've seen a few bands use the Peavey Valve King with a ts9 or similar in front and it sounds just like Killswitch engage (Laney Ironhearts). They're real cheap too, around $400 used for a 100w head.

Re: Your favorite cheap high gain tube amp

STAY AWAY. $515 is an absolute rip-off for a hot-rodded Valvestate. It only has a single 12AX7 in the preamp, so I wouldn't consider it a tube amp. Second, their reliability is terrible. A friend of mine used to have one as his gigging amp, but it spent more time in the shop than in his hands. After the 4th or 5th time it crapped out on him, he finally sold it.
