Your favorite echo unit?

Hi Folks,

After an amp upgrade, I'm no longer very happy with my DL4 (it sounds thin to me). I don't have a lot of pedals (actually...I only have one other...a Maxon Rotary Phaser). Adding something to my signal chain makes a very noticeable difference, so the unit needs to leave my signal alone when it is off. This will go in front of the amp (no effects loop).

I suppose the unit I hear in my head would be like a MemoryMan (this is the patch I found myself using the most on the DL4), but without the tone-sucking and noise issues or the failure issues (are the new MM better?? The last one that failed on me was in the '80s and I never got another one).

I have surfed the web and read every companies' propaganda on their boxes...what do you real world users think?

I am particularly interested in opinions on the Diamond Memory Lane, the Blackbox Quicksilver, the Damage Control Timeline, and the Fulltone TTE. These are all expensive (especially the TTE), so I'd like to gather as much data as I can before venturing out to 1) find them 2) hear them and 3) donate my spare kidney to afford one of them. I know tone is subjective, but I value your input.

Thanks,

FAC

Edit: Info on the Carl Martin Delayla would be great, too, although it does not look like it has modulation on the echos...but would the second tap help with that?

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

I have three that I experience erection for.
1) AIWA TAPE from the seventies
2) Echoplex
3) TTE from Fulltone

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

I've got a Pigtonix Echolution that I would consider to be one of the best echo/delay pedals out on the market. It does pretty much anything you could want out of a delay pedal. I'm getting fairly bored with it though and I'm looking for something a little more simplistic and I want to sell it so I can put the money into other pedals. If you're interested in it shoot a PM. (sorry guys I know I should post this in the Trading Post but I figured I'd offer it)

Doh I really do not like those do it all delays.....that is why I have quite a few different delays!
Same with overdrives....I like them to be different.

so, Rid, are "do-it-all" delays overrated? :chairfall

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

From a users point...erm well most of the time it is for very specialised players!
Not that I do not like delays with some options.
But I have had so many delays....hehe

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

Well, my fav delay will not leave your signal alone when it's off but IMO it'sm a welcome change!

I have and use a Maestro EP-3 Echoplex...IMO best delay tone out there. Now, it doesn't have a million pre sets, super long delay time, tap tempo, blah, blah, blah but for a rich real delay/echo tone nothing beats it IMO.

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

That Memory Lane looks amazing, I've been GASsing for one for a couple of years now... The DMM is better than it used to be, it's got TB and seems to be a little more reliable. My favorites for tone (of the ones I've used) are the DMM, DM-3 and Maxon AD-900. None of those has tap tempo obviously though...

Oh yeah, and the TTE looks REALLY amazing, but I know I'll never get one of those.

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

I'm sure Rich S would agree with me but
RocktronShortTimerBig.gif
has been a fantastic delay/echo, it sounds really good and it's less than half of other units that are out there.

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

Thanks for the tips so far! Tap is not a requirement for me. I had forgotten about Maxon...silly me, since my other pedal is a maxon phaser!

I agree. CLIPS PLEASE !!!

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

I just bought a DLS Echo Tap off BBent and it's a GREAT delay...subtle and nothing over the top, tap tempo...very useful...I freakin love it

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

Ahhh...to The guy who invented fire and the Dr....Regarding the Echoplex...

I had one when I was in high school...but my ears were not trained enough to know what I had...it's long, long gone...makes me feel old...I can still recall the tape essentially disintegrating before my very eyes...such nostalgia...

But really...Fck nostalgia, this is the here and now...Since we're on the subject of tape...is the TTE close, worse, or perhaps even better?? On paper, the TTE seems great. A lot of $$$ for an echo, but, at the moment, I have a spare kidney...anyone have experience with the TTE? If so, I'm also curious about its capabilities as a boost (the propaganda says +15 db of tube boost, if so desired).

!!!

edit: I would prefer a new unit versus a vintage unit, for various reasons.

The T-Rex Replica is well worth a listen. I played through one a few weeks ago and was making mental comparisons to my beloved DM-2, and the Replica on its "tape echo" setting was remarkably good. I am normally allergic to anything digital between my fingers and the speakers, but this one could find its way onto my pedal board without any fuss.

The "D word" is what I worry about, and is the main reason I'm not happy with the DL4...but I will check the T-Rex out and try not to have an automatic bias because it is digital (I think the Timeline is digital, too, but I liked the clips on their site so I want to check it out, regardless of A or D).

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

I like the Line 6 DL4. It's my fave. Doesn't sound thin to me!:sword:

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

I had a DL4 but it was too much pedal for me. I traded Keith for my DMM. Man I love that thing. I really dig the modulation effects that it does.
