Your favorite echo unit?

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

OMG...

I cannot believe no-one has mentioned it. Most famous echo behind the echoplex?

Roland Space Echo. Wickedest delay out there for my tastes :bigthumb:

An old Ibby or Boss (early 80s) analog is not too shabby either.

No idea about booteek stuff.

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

I've never played through a tape echo unit before, so at the risk of sounding horribly naïve, is there a huge difference between tape echo and analog -- or even high-end digital -- delay units?

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

Analouge delays sounds very little like tape echos!
Well some perhaps if the tape is worn out!
Otherwise, the tapes are fat and clear if they serviced well!
It also depends on how the tape echo is made, but tape is not lofi and funky!

I like Space Echo's as much as the next guy but finding tape(s) and parts is MUCH harder than it is with an Echoplex so I went the high road...

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

Actually the only analouge ones I like are old 19" ones....never had a pedal that I liked much, I like hybrid digital analouge ones best for everyday use!
Tapes are too much of a hassle allthough they sound fab!

IMO, NOTHING touches the tone of a tape echo...IF it's running correctly. A tape echo in good shape is hard to beat, a tape echo in need of work sounds terrible to me. So, in short I say...yes there is a huge difference.

I have one of these:

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

Seriously...

As tubeman87 said, I likes my Rocktron Short Timers. They sound good, have all the features I need (few), and are dirt cheap. They sometimes pop when I switch them on, but a 1-meg resistor would fix that, if I could just find the time.

My only other complaint is their size. I'm thinking about dumping one of them to make room for two normal-size stompboxes on my somewhat cramped pedalboard.

The Rocktron website claims 400 ms of delay...I don't need 20 seconds, to be sure, but 400 ms might be limiting....this issue's caused me to rethink a few of the pedals mentioned in the original post...a few of them are ~500 ms. I'll need to play with one to see if this would be enough delay time. I will check the short timer out in any event, given the endorsements here.

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

Have you considered the Echoczar by Tone Czar?

- Keith

Good call. I had not seen this one. I just visited the website and it looks like it's a one man operation (you order the pedal, he makes it and sends it to you). According to the website, the wait time on the Echozar is 12 months...

It may be the beez kneez, but a 12 month wait on a pedal I won't be able to demo first is a stretch... It does seem very cool, though.

A twelve-month wait?!? I didn't realize that. Forget it.

To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with the audio and video clips. Also, it may have more bells and whistles than you need.

Re: Your favorite echo unit?

Unless all hell breaks loose, I have most of the day free tomorrow...I'll be loading up my les paul** and heading out to find and check out as many of these boxes you've all suggested as possible.

As much as I really want an echo device, I dread going to the local music stores and being subjected to all the noise, unhelpful salespeople, salespeople who know LESS about the gear than me but pretend they know more, and salespeople with attitudes. To all the 'tuded salespeople out there...do you want me to buy something from you or go somewhere else? I may not be Jimmy Page but he ain't here, is he?

Any last minute advice is welcomed!

**Left Handed 3 pickup 57 historic reissue, I swapped out two of the three humbuckers for Phat Cats...sounds incredible.
