your favorite OD/Dist pedal used as a small boost?

Re: your favorite OD/Dist pedal used as a small boost?

Bad Monkey, got it as a gamble when they first came out. Gotta dig the treble and bass controls, i never really realized how much they do until i fooled around with other pedals that only have the one tone control.

Re: your favorite OD/Dist pedal used as a small boost?

By small boost, are you saying "clean boost'? The Fulltone OCD with the gain cranked all the way down is the best clean boost i know of this side of the Clark "Gainster", or the Exotic Effects RC booster, or the HAO clean boost effect.I tried the Boosta grande BBE, which is also a very good small/clean(?) boost. Its a very fine line between OD and cleanboost.

Re: your favorite OD/Dist pedal used as a small boost?

^ Love the Monkey, but unfortunately (like most ods) it doesn't work into my AC30. AC30's are notoriously picky when it comes to overdrive pedals. The bass control on the monkey made things sound farty (AC30 is open back cab). The best pedal into my Vox I've tried so far is a Blues Driver that I modified. Something about that pedal that just rocks into my vox.
Have any other recommendations for AC30 type amps as I'm soon to get a Matchless DC-30 clone and wondered what OD pedals worked. I've got a stock SD-1 lying around that I might look at getting modded. I know its a bit off topic but I can comment on the thread.

I use an SD-1 as a booster but i'm looking into getting it modded for better boost tone (sound to narrow)

ts9

tried and true. Even when the amp is dimed & doesn't get any louder, the TS makes it SEEM louder, and has enough drive in it to thicken up your leads

i've really never been unhappy with it

Same here, they add nice dirt with the dist. knob turned all the way down.

i have 3 fav pedals for boosting drive:

1. Rocktron Austin Gold- because it lets you have more of what you already like, not intruding with its inherent drive

2. Guyatone OD2- a variation of the JRC4558 chip tone

3. Ibanez TS7- the all time fav TS tone with a hotter option

There's a few that I like. The Boss SD-1, OD-1 are two right off the bat. I also like the MXR Wylde OD - it's got a little more drive than the SD-1. The OD side of the Visual Sound Jeckyll and Hyde is really sweet too.

I'm normally not one to like Tube Screamers but I do like the sound of the original TS-808. I modded my SD-1 to the same components and really like how it responds.

However, my new favorite is the Visual Sound Route 808 and Double Trouble. The Route 808 is their take on the TS-808 circuit with a bass boost switch and more volume. The Double Trouble is 2 of the Route 808's in one enclosure. By far the best TS clone I've ever played through.

Another nice boost to bring back some sparkle - AMZ Mosfet Boost. It's a DIY Project but worth building. I use it as a buffer for driving long cable runs.

The Ulbrick 12AXE. In 30 years of messing around with pedals, I haven't heard anything else that sounds more like the host amp being driven a little harder. It stays tight in the bottom end, retains clarity while adding punch and actually increases dynamic intensity and range. Dave Ulbrick is a genius. Two of his most recent customers are Larry Carlton and Robben Ford, who both bought 12AXE's and a couple of Dave's incredible amps when they were here a few months ago.

Cheers............................wahwah

Erikh, ain't that route 66, not 808 ?

And, my one and only od pedal is SD-1. So I guess it's my favorite also.
The only thing I don't like about in the SD-1 is the fact that it kills the sound when it's off. I guess I'm too lazy to mod it, at least when I get me a MI Audio Boost'n'Buff or EQ (preferably MXR 10-band)

No, it's 808. Brand new, not on the market yet but some places are taking preorders. It's the overdrive portion of the Route 66 and Jeckyll & Hyde in it's own single pedal with a bass boost toggle.

What else is in your chain besides the SD-1? The bypass buffer in the Boss pedals is fine for driving long cable runs and really doesn't affect the sound much to my ear. The only problem I hear about it is when the drive is all the way up, there's a slight bleed of the drive in to the bypassed signal. If you play totally clean from time to time, this could be an issue. If you don't, it'd be difficult to tell it's even there.

Re: your favorite OD/Dist pedal used as a small boost?

For a clean boost or small boost - still need clarification! little boost, little grit, little bite. Awesome. Maybe better as a boost than an OD.

MXR micro amp for pimp-slappin' the tubes up-side the diode.

Re: your favorite OD/Dist pedal used as a small boost?

I like the MXR Zakk Wylde OD. It's a lot like a tubescreamer with just a little more gain.

Same circuit actually. Only the Wylde OD is a clone of the Boss SD-1. It also has no output buffer where the Tube Screamer and SD-1 both do. It's a great pedal, I agree.
