Marshall....most of the other rock amps are variations on that theme. I own a JCM 800 with the 2205 circuit (well, originally, it's now modified by Jeff Seal, but I still have the intact 2205 circuitry).
I think unfortunately, unless you can afford a vintage Plexi, JCM 800 or Metal Faced 70's models....you can find better sounding and performing amps outside the Marshall line...specifically in Bogner and some of the custom amp builders like Jeff Seal, Scott Splawn, Trace @ Vodoo, Dave Bray, Doug Roccoforte and the like. It's still all the Marshall sound (basically), but they now do it better than Marshall themselvs can.
So, even though there are other more practicle and better sounding amps than current production Marshalls, the vote still goes to Marshall for the rock sound.
