Marshall....most of the other rock amps are variations on that theme. I own a JCM 800 with the 2205 circuit (well, originally, it's now modified by Jeff Seal, but I still have the intact 2205 circuitry).

I think unfortunately, unless you can afford a vintage Plexi, JCM 800 or Metal Faced 70's models....you can find better sounding and performing amps outside the Marshall line...specifically in Bogner and some of the custom amp builders like Jeff Seal, Scott Splawn, Trace @ Vodoo, Dave Bray, Doug Roccoforte and the like. It's still all the Marshall sound (basically), but they now do it better than Marshall themselvs can.

So, even though there are other more practicle and better sounding amps than current production Marshalls, the vote still goes to Marshall for the rock sound.

I'm with ya bro. For the most part new Marshall's are just not the same. DSL's aren't too bad, and some of the 900s are decent..but...its not the same.

Personally I think the best "deal" out there is to grab a 1987X or 59SLP RI used...and have Jeff, Trace, Scott, or David, whomever mod it...will cost ya much less than a boutique amp. Figure about 7 bills for the amp, and 5 -6 bills for a new tranny and mod (don't necc even need the new tranny). $1300 bucks of Pure Marshall fury. My stock 1987X is a great sounding amp. Only mod I'd have done is to tighten up the bottom end a tad when she's dimed..maybe a PPI Master too for more bearable volume at home.

My Rivera is awesome too, but it's not quite all there...close, but not quite. And in a combo it was $1400.

I really can't vote, I haven't played most of those amps! I like Marshall, but I'm not sure if it's totally for me. I like Mesa quite a bit too. I just can't decide.

I'll agree with everyone who said Marshall is the definitive rock amp. I still prefer plugging into boutique versions, just because they've enhanced the best properties of the very best Marshalls. It's hard to not love them. Here's another amp that is just pure tonal delight.....the sweetest looking Splawn I've seen!

I'll agree with everyone who said Marshall is the definitive rock amp. I still prefer plugging into boutique versions, just because they've enhanced the best properties of the very best Marshalls. It's hard to not love them. Here's another amp that is just pure tonal delight.....the sweetest looking Splawn I've seen!

You should go to his shop and see some of the stuff he has. Purple tolex, orange tolex, combinations...solid wood. Nice stuff. The nicest one I saw was set up a lot like your Bogner, but it was his build. It had the black tolex with the cane grillcloth inset like on a Marshall or your Bogner...setting on top of a matching cab....I almost sh!te myself. That made the decision for me to get my Marshall cab re-grilled with the cane grill cloth.

I'm really interested in the new amps that Jeff Seal is building, but a Splawn 50 Plexi clone with Merc Magnetics tranny's and 3 foot switchable channels of Marshall bliss is one thing I'd like to have at some point. And at $1800, it's still at least a grand cheaper than you can get a Bogner for.

OK for anyone who didn't cheat (and actually cares)..that clip was a voodoo modded Dual Rec. Trace does amazing work. I think those clips sound more "marshally" than the clips of his modded TSLs!

Voted Marshall because that's always been my reference and just got a Splawn. Gotta say the Splawn is one piece of gear that has lived up to the hype and all of the expectations I had. It just does everything I want in a rock/metal amp and gives me a big, goofy grin everytime I plug in. :headbang:

Kinda funny.....

For metal I prefer Mesa rhythm and Marshall-ish leads.

For rock I prefer Marshall-ish rhythm and Mesa leads.

I say "Marshal-ish" because I think there's alot of companies that make a way better Marshall amp than Marshall Amps.

Anyway.....for rock I voted Bogner....though I agree with the others that it is more or less just a hotrodded Marshall.

It all goes back to the LP/marshall thing for me. They might be variations of, but thats the basic formula.

Hmmm, no Cornford or Engl - the best amps I've tried, so other than that it has to be Marshall of the Silver Jubilee variety!!

I like pre-800 Marshalls. Of the higher gain stuff I've tried, I like Soldano. Thinking hard about getting one.

I got snooked on a JCM800 lead series... fella said he wanted to sell at a good price but ended up not selling. Damn. It could be my one way ticket to a sound in paradise

i voted fender. I think my setup right now, both knobs on 10, with a tubescreamer set for clean boost, is about as good as you can get. That pearly gate really sings, and the '59 sounds like acdc but better (to my ears, atleast)

i also plugged in a p90 hamer once, and it sounded friggin sweet, too
