Your Signature Guitar?

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Q1: Which company called you?

Rickenbacker

Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? (Need not be in current production.)

360-WB (made in the 80s with the white binding on the front and pointy cutaways)

Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours?

Jetglo. Tailpiece shaped like an "H" instead of an "R".

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar?

Rick-O-Sound output converted to bottle opener, since it will get a lot more use.

Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item?

Susanna Hoffs' panties as a polishing cloth

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Ok, let's pretend...

So you've made it to the top of the heap, and now your favorite guitar maker calls you up and begs you to authorize a signature guitar.

Q1: Which company called you? Ernie Ball Music Man, Brian Moore, Godin or Parker (Would be ok doing a custom Strat, too, but that would be more of a tear-up.)

Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? Game Changer or Silhouette (Steve Morse model?) if Music Man. LGX-SA if Godin, C90 if Moore and the Adrian Belew model if Parker... (Yes, the Adrian Belew Parker isn't complicated enough...)

Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours? 5 pickups, Piezo & MIDI

Neck has a tele voiced single coil and a PAF voiced pickup mounted so they look like a humbucker, Bridge is a mini-humbucker, bridge-middle pickup covers lipstick-tube jangle and neck-middle brings Brian May punchy single coil tones for blending with other pickups...
Bridge pickup sends to a separate output if you plug into a second jack.

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar? HipShot trem, tremsetter, improved trem block. Master Volume & Master Tone controls are both mounted in range for pinky rolls. Other tone modifying knobs and switches are intentionally smaller or recessed to prevent accidental changes (things like choosing different caps in the tone circuit or assigning a ToneStyler or VariTone to different pickup selector switch positions.

I'd like to add the continuous controller modification, but shhhhh - it's a secret. End result is that you can send CC data directly from the guitar.

Another "tricky bit" I'd love to add is a radio based switching / a foot pedal or MIDI can remotely select pickups and conversely selecting a pickup on the normal switch sends MIDI patch change information. Switch to the neck pickup, get the "crunch" channel. Switch to bridge, get "lead" channel... for instance. Or using neck pickup gets reverb, switch to bridge gets delay...

Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item? A Leatherman tool with wire cutters instead of pliers.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Q1: Which company called you?
Gibson, but i tell them to stuff it. Then i change my mind.

Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? (Need not be in current production.)
double cutaway LP jr.

Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours? Tune o matic bridge
Fine tuners on the saddle. Locking nut. Available only in lefty.

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar? Tobacco color stain, no finish. Solid maple center with mahagony wings. 12th fret marker only. Logo printed in reverse.

Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item? Matching ukelele

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

1. Gibson
2. Explorer Standard
3. Mahogany body, slimtaper D shaped mahogany neck, ebony fretboard, jumbo frets, 24.75", black hardware, Duncan pickups (59 neck, Distortion bridge), 2 volume 1 tone, three way switch, Sperzel Lockers, Graph Tech TUSQ XL Black nut, 24 frets, Tune o Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece with piezo pickups in each saddle, three way switch to choose between the piezo and magnetic pickups (John Petrucci style), Les Paul Axcess heel.
4. Naval camouflage with anchor inlays (I told my brother that my first custom guitar will be navy camo with those inlays), the knobs located parallel to the body, the toggle switch placed next to the knobs, black dome knobs with anchors inlaid in them, Dunlop Flush mounted Straplocks.
5. A set of Dunlop Heavy Core 11-50 strings, a pack of Dunlop Tortex Sharp 0.73 picks (black with a silver anchor on one side with my signature on the other), a matching Levy strap (navy camo again). Also 10% of every guitar sold goes to Wounded Warriors.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Q1: Which company called you? Jackson USA
Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? (Need not be in current production.) KE1 and SL2 w/ Kahler trem
Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours? I've asked them to copy my Jackson USA neck thru but they wouldn't entertain me bringing my guitar to the Custom Shop for neck measurements and they have no record of spec's based on several phone conversations with them.. :(
Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar? Copy my guitar exactly and invert the headstock, Ebony with no markers
Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item? That it be available in it's exact form for others to buy. Don't dumb it down. Keep it real

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

I'd make a Gibson LP Custom, non weight relieved, white limba body and neck with a spalted maple top. Antique natural finish on back and sides clear gloss on top, and a real ebony fretboard, and cream binding all around. Hardware would be the standard stuff but nickel instead of gold, pick ups would be a Screaming Demon bridge and Slash sig. neck, both in black & cream zebra. Case candy would be a pick, signed certificate and it would come in the old "chainsaw" case

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Ibanez

RG

Alder/Quilted maple body, old Roadstar headstock, gold hardware, Lo Pro trem, straight headstock, flattened soft V neck profile that's as thick ad a 57 Strat's, slightly rounder edges, Steve Vai jack, 5 piece maple walnut neck that comprises the fretboard as well, transparent lapis lazuli finish, stainless super jumbo frets, last 8 frets scalloped.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Q1: Which company called you?

Jackson

Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? (Need not be in current production.)

Two versions. One a SL1 Soloist and the other a SL2 Soloist with the SL1's control layout including the 5 way switch. With both, I would want a Mahogany body to warm the guitar up a bit (as they are, Soloists are bright), and I would want a FU brass block on each Floyd (not sure on the size).

For pickups on the SL1, I would go with a Perpetual Burn in the bridge, an Alnico II Pro Tele bridge pickup in the middle, and for the neck, I guess I'd have to consult with the good folks here on the forum because I have several ideas but aren't sure which one I would want for sure. Also, I would want a 5 way Super Switch set up as follows: 1) Bridge Full, 2) Bridge Split/Middle 3) Bridge Split/Neck, 4) Middle/Neck, 5) Neck, and I would want a mini-toggle to have the middle pickup by it's self.

For the SL2, I would go with a Screamin' Demon in the bridge and a Pearly Gates neck. I would also go with a 5 way Super Switch as follows: 1) Bridge Full, 2) Bridge Split, 3) Bridge Split/Neck Split, 4) Neck Split, & 5) Neck Full.

Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours?

A quilted maple top with a properly done dye job on all of the wood that really makes the wood pop visually. NO tinted lacquers. I want to see the grain of the wood and not have it masked.

But on the flip side, I would also like to have the option of having a version painted Farmall Red.

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar?

Stainless pickup rings. All hardware would have a Melonite treatment. It would come strung with Dean Markley Blue Steel 11s tuned one whole step down (DGCFAD). It would also come with Dunlop Strap Lock buttons installed.

Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item?

A plain Fender cotton strap with Dunlop Strap Locks installed, and a bag of Dunlop John Petrucci Jazz III picks.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Gibson dream:
Les Paul Junior Doublecut
Cherry finish
Non-recessed Floyd
DiMarzio X2N in zebra coils

Jackson dream:
Kelly (only deviations from stock KE2 spec are noted)
White finish with black pinstripes
Mahogany body
Maple neck, San Dimas era construction (laminated, thicker, nibbed fretboard)
Gold hardware
Non-recessed Floyd
Seymour Duncan Custom / '59 (gold covered)
Gibson-style speed knobs and pickup switch washer

I'm ordering the Jackson dream model, but since it's a Custom Select and not a Masterbuilt, I had to give up the pinstripes and San Dimas neck construction. I'm putting on the pinstripe tape and Gibson plastics myself.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Had it and sold it just over a year ago in early stages of an ugly divorce...

1982 Gibson Les Paul Standard: (10.7 lbs): Stock Gibson other than upgrades of Gold Vintage 1984 Gibson TP-5 Fine Tuning Tailpiece, 1988 Gibson “The Original” HB-R/HB-L (Bill Lawrence) Humbuckers wired to individual Gibson 500K Volumes and Fender TBX Tone Controls and a DiMarzio Cliplock Strap.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Great thread. I might as well just take my three electrics and put them to one. Every one of them has something nice that others don´t.

Q1: Which company called you?

I´m not that much into a certain company, but let´s say Jackson. My #1 is one of their Indonesian models. Sig model will also be made there to make it available for cheaper price.

Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? (Need not be in current production.)

Jackson JS30DK

Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours?

Mahogany/basswood body with thin maple cap, Ibanez kinda heel, H/S/S configuration (pups routed directly to the body); in the bridge custom pickup: slightly overwound Antiquity Jazz (man, I love neck pups in bridge), STK-S4 in neck and middle to get some stratty tones which I love, 5-way switching and push/pull pot to get the bridge on with neck + middle and neck combinations, 500k vol and 250k tone (must have for the singles, I mess up with the tones all the time with my Squier), bypass switch, side output jack, OFR with 37mm steel block, 1-piece bolt-on maple neck with reversed Strat headstock and hard maple fretboard w/ 22 SS frets, 10-16" compound radius, 43mm nut width, nice thick C profile which turns to thinner D above the 12th fret.

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar?

Tremol-No, either black/chrome hardware, optional black or white pickguard (can be removed, just for the looks due the rear rout), no truss rod cover, and any color customer wants!

Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item?

GH controller´s strap with some DIY strap locks, which means some cloth washers and screw driver. They come with the price.

1. Fender

2. Esquire

3. AVRI quality guitar that is an extremely accurate mid-1952 Esquire replica in Desert Sand color. Some screws Phillips, some flathead. Pure, thin nitrocellulose lacquer, with no Fullerplast or similar sealer. Must come N.O.S. only, no Closet Classic, Relic, Heavy Relic, etc. B.S. Guitar must be below $2K out the door, and I would prefer $1,600 (though I don't think that would be feasible).

4. Eldred wiring mod, with cap selector switch between the two control knobs. Switch is a Gibson 3-way that selects between .0011, .0022, and .0033 uF capacitance values.

5. Accurate reproduction of the brown thermometer case, vintage-style cable and leather strap. Bridge cover is a must as well!

Aside from the cap selector switch, the thermometer case, and the pure nitro finish (pretty sure mine is catalyzed lacquer), this is my main guitar. The cap selector switch is on another one of my Esquires, though.

Gibson

Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? (Need not be in current production.)

ES-295

Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours?

Natural finish all around.
Book-matched grade-AAAA woods. (Must sound as good as an acoustic as it does as an electric)
Flame maple back and neck
New York Epiphone-style cloud inlays on the fingerboard (J-200 crown inlays if Epi not possible)

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar?

Stinger headstock, pre '48 script logo with L-5 binding and flower-pot inlay
Seymour Duncan Antiquity P-90s
CTS pots
Sprague Orange, Black Bee, or Vitamin Q caps (because they are consistent, stable values, not for any other reason)
Bigsby tailpiece and Tune-o-matic bridge with nylon saddles

Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item?

Removable armrest
Optional Piezo/acoustic pickup bridge with pickguard controls
Optional '52 Trapeze bridge conversion
Signed picture of Scotty Moore
45rpm copies of
  • Rocket 88 by Ike Turner
  • Good Rockin' Tonight by Wynonnie Harris
  • That's All Right Mama by Elvis Presley
  • Rock Around The Clock by Bill Hailey
and a USB with audio files of those same singles, A and B sides.

A mockup isn't a purty as a real guitar, but this is the idea.

Technically this isn't my signature - I've never owned a real ES-295, but it's a guitar I really really want that would become a major player, both as an acoustic and an electric. So, I broke the rules, but that's what musicians do.
