Your Signature Guitar?

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Awesome thread! I've already got my "signature guitars" though, so were I to become an endorser the companies wouldn't have to do much! Except I would likely request a 7-string versions of my existing 6-strings.

Q1: Which company called you?

either Fender, Ibanez, or PRS -- I'm not too picky about who makes my guitars!

Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? (Need not be in current production.)

Fender American Deluxe Tele FMT HH, Ibanez RX750, PRS Custom 22

Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours?

Bone stock save for Seymour Duncan Custom Shop pickups (the Éclair pickups are awesome -- smooth and rich with great note articulation)

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar?

vintage-style cloth wire, top notch CTS and CRL electrics, paper-in-oil caps, 50s wiring

Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item?

a handful of guitar picks, pack of strings, and coupon for two free bottles of Grolsch beer -- to use those rubber pop-top grommets as strap locks

Default Your Signature Guitar?
Ok, let's pretend...

So you've made it to the top of the heap, and now your favorite guitar maker calls you up and begs you to authorize a signature guitar.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

It would be a G&L, based on their Comanche model...a Comanche XII 12-string.

12" radius neck, 1.75" wide, slightly taller than vintage frets, graphite nut.
3-G&L Z-Coil pickups, 5-way switch, plus toggle for 7-way switching. G&L PTB tone controls.
Flamed maple neck. Vintage tint. Optional fingerboards.
G&L Saddle Lock bridge.
Ash or alder body, depending on color.

Specific color options:

Forest Green Metallic, matching headstock, RW board, white pearl guard, white plastic, natural wood body binding, alder;
Forest Green Metallic, matching headstock, RW board, tortoise guard, black plastic, natural wood body binding, alder;
Purple Metallic, matching headstock, ebony board, white pearl guard, white plastic, alder;
Purple Metallic, maple board, white pearl guard, white plastic, alder.
Gloss Black, matching headstock, RW board, tortoise guard, black plastic, natural wood body binding, alder;

In ash, you could get:

Transparent Blonde, maple neck, white 3-ply guard, white plastic;
Honey Burst, maple neck, white 3-ply guard, white plastic;
Old School Tobacco Sunburst, RW board, white 3-ply guard, white plastic, natural wood body binding;

And I'd like to keep the street price between $2000--2200.

You'd get a compilation CD of classic rock hits featuring a 12-string guitar; Certificate of Authenticity; and a nice, heavy, ladder-back adjustable leather strap, adjustable to 56" in dark brown, featuring the G&L logo.

There's simply nothing like this on the market...a TOP-quality 12-string with a wider neck based on a strat body. I think it would sell.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Q1: Which company called you?
Ibanez

Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? (Need not be in current production.)
Iceman

Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours?
I'd definitely want mine in 7 string configuration with a Daphne Blue solid color body, 27" 5-piece neck, maple fretboard, and an inline headstock with matching color. I'd also want it with a fixed vibrato bridge instead of the Floyd Rose.

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar?
Call me crazy, but I'd like the HSH pickups configurations. BUT the humbuckers are constructed with rod magnets instead of bar magnets (like a 7 string version of the Seymour Duncan Stag Mags with AlNiCo 5s). I'd want it with a 3-way switch, coil-splitting for both humbuckers via push-pull, and a push-pull switch to turn on/off the middle pickup. I know many would use the traditional 5-way switch, however I want to have 3 noise-cancelling modes when in all single coil mode.

Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item?
I'd have a custom vibrato block in the case. If I'm not in the mood to fuss with the vibrato system, I can block it without having to make the block myself :)

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

All-mahogany body and neck, rosewood or ebony board.
HH or SH setup option.
Volume, tone, and 3-way switcher with a coil tap.
Oil finished neck with stainless frets, 12" radius.
String-through TOM or Floyd option.
Schaller locking tuners.
Selection of finishes that I pick including clear satin for that naked look.

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar?

Custom Inlay/side dots. Sculpted heel joint.

Interesting that this thread comes up when I'm making some adjustments to a custom guitar that a friend built for me earlier this year. It doesn't have all of these specs but it's got most of them. ;)

When it's "done" I'll make a separate thread on that.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

It's funny to look at my posts from 3 years ago and think there's no way I'd play those as my main guitar now. So...

Q1. Who called me? Fender

Q2. What model(s)? Esquire and Scaled down Jazz body

Q3. What specs? Esquire would use the neck from the American Elite Tele with maple fretboard and it would be unfinished roasted flame maple. Body would be alder in Seafoam Green metal flake finish with a black pickguard. Electronics would be a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Tele-Bro-90, reversed control plate. Switching would be 1. Volume, 2. Volume & Tone, 3. Volume & Eldred cocked wah mod, and the volume pot would be push/pull coil tap.
The other guitar would be a Jazz bass body scaled down to guitar size, alder body, unfinished roasted maple neck with ebony fretboard with 70's block inlays, CBS headstock, and compound radius. Body would have the same Seafoam flake finish, hardtail strat bridge, Duncan P-90s (Hot bridge Vintage neck) master Vol/Master Tone and 3 position toggle.
Q4. Nothing
Q5. COA, a pack of Dunlop .73mm Ultex picks with my signature on them, and a white Dimarzio cliplock strap.

Ps. I have small hands so both guitars would have 1 5/8" width Tusq nuts

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Mine would literally be this one

Semi hollow es style L.P.
Ebony or rosewood board
Stainless steel standard frets
Black hardware with Grover 502BC locking tuners

Update...................

Went with the planet waves that I had lying round

My '89 Yamaha RGX Custom with neck-thru body, ebony FB, crystal inlays...it's my most versatile guitar with a master coil-split on the pull/push tone knob.

It'd currently be a cross between these 2. I'd be more than happy for either Fret-King or Fender to contact me about it! :)

I'd like the bridge from the Fret-King on the Tele, then a high power single pickup from the mid position of the Fret-King to be placed under the scratchplate of the Fender. A 5-way switch would then be wired: 1. Bridge 2. Bridge/Middle 3. Bridge/Neck (normal Tele) 4. Middle/Neck 5. Neck

A garish strap and hat should be part of the case candy! :)

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

I would go with

Q1: Which company called you?

Fender

Q2: Which standard model in their product lineup do you base your sig off of? (Need not be in current production.)

An Esquire

Q3: What specs do you insist upon that make it uniquely yours?

Ash body with 1 piece maple neck, no-caster bridge pickup

Q4: What other customizations do you make to the guitar?

seafoam green of shell pink (why not both)

Q5: What special piece of "case candy" goes with it as a collector's item?

A second control plate with only 1 volume, different knobs

Blast from the past thread. Nice to see what I was thinking over 3 years ago. I had good taste. The 3rd knob would be designated for the neck pick up to add in into the mix of any of the positions on the 5 way switch.

Re: Your Signature Guitar?

Which company? Fender
Which model? Strat
How would it be unique? It would sort of be a collage of all my favorite features found on current signature models. Such as, a dot for the first fret and cubic zirconia side markers on the neck like a Danny Galton Tele. Binding on the neck and the Eric Johnson tone control mod like a Eric Johnson Strat. A big neck and a hard tail body like a Robert Cray Strat. The finishes would be colors I like such as the Clapton 7 Up green, the Jeff Beck Rebella yella, Palamino Brown like on some Eric Johnson models.
What mods: David Allen Tru-62 pickups, Callaham saddles, jumbo frets like a Strat plus, and a 9.5 neck radius.
Case candy: a set of semi flat GHS nickel rockers strings.

Q2 Stratocaster / Chesapeake Severn SSS

Q3
Maple or birch body with some form of sun- or tobaccoburst, or possibly blackburst. Contoured heel, 6-point tremolo. 9,5 radius soft v neck with rosewood fretboard.

Jaguar switch in place of volume knob. Locking tuners. 3 true singles with hot middle and tappable bridge (or possibly 4 singlecoils in HH pickguard. I'm still prototyping this setup myself).

Two volumes (neck/middle and bridge) plus no-load master volume. Parallel/ single/ series switching. Tele-style 4-way switch with bridge tap/full /middle/neck positions. Jackplate to house third pot and better knobs to make push-pull pots easier to use.

Q4 above

Q5 Bottle of cheap blended scotch
