i've got a 1960A with 2 G12H30's and 2 G12T75's and it sounds better than both either one by them selves. something real cool happens when you mix speakers.

Based on everything I've read from the original poster, I'd second Metlking's suggestion of either 4 Vin 30 or a mix of V30/G12-75T. Even the Bogner Uberkab comes with that mix.

I did some experimenting with my most recent purchase, a Marshall 1960AHW. I ended up realizing it's not X pattern I like, but same on top, same on bottom.
One reason is that with the X pattern, the tone changes depending on which side you're standing closest to. I really like the Vin 30 on top, G12-75T on bottom. This would be for a big heavy rock or metal tone. My suggestions might be different for someone else.

Not a fan of the V30s. They are very driven and have a roar that doesn't go away no matter what. And the T-75s are just bad.

Still trying to be brave enough to order 4x G12-65 clones from WGS or somewhere. Those are much more round sounding, and flexible

These are some good ideas guys.

I sold my Blue Voodoo cab that had V30's in it to a guy who might sell it back for $50 or $100. Then I'll just get a used 1960b cab and X pattern in the V30's or replace the GT-75's all together.

IMO, that's the best way to buy speakers. Find a crappy used cab with good speakers.

i don't know how this thread became a discussion on speakers, but as far as the cabinet itself, some people in the know are slamming the build quality of many new production Marshall 1960 cabinets, even though they are still made in Benchley AFAIK.
basically alot of guys are saying the old ones are the best sounding ones, and the new ones are outrageously expensive here for what you get, and that you are paying several hundred dollars for the Marshall nameplate as opposed to buying something Like an Egnator Cabi9net, or other excellent quality US built cabinets.
I don't really know, as I all i run are vintage cabs and speakers ( although IO do have a G12M-Heritage loaded 90's Park Marshall cabinet..but I'll probably sell it.

I like mine just fine. When I bought mine used, i did a few things that made it a little better. I caulked up all the corners, sides, and gaps I could find on the inside to minimize air leaks. I also plugged every screw hole for the baffle with toothpicks and wood glue, this way when I put the rear baffle back on the screws would have plenty of grab on the wood, some of them were barely holding on to anything before. Now its nice and tight. My speakers are gt75 and hellatone 60(v30) in an x pattern. So far its been the best cab I could ask for.

Last I knew 1960's are still made of birch marine plye with a dense and rigid particle board back plate. This is how they have been built since about 1970. The back plate was also plye prior to about 1970 (along with internal sound insulation early on), but the particle board back plate appears to have been introduced for sonic rationals.

Many years ago, I bought an old, beat-up Sunn 4X12 from the pawn shop for $100. Tore in there and low and behold... it was loaded with old Celestion G12-H30s rated at 15 ohms (yes... FIFTEEN). I've moved those speakers around many times over the years. One time, I accidently put a screw driver through the old paper cone. But a piece of masking tape later, it was good-as new. I've currently got them in my Marshall JCM900 1960B cab and it just sounds awesome. So crunchy, so chewy, so sweet.

As far as Marshall 1960 cabs go, I've had 1960A and 1960B cabs and they all sound great. I prefer the deeper sound of the B cab.

Never been a fan of the GT75 speakers. Just too fizzy and thin for me when pushed hard. But seem more suited for cleans mild overdrive and a mid level crunch to my ears.

They push a ton of air though.

I've played GH12 and V30s together and like them and the same may go for V30/GT75s.

I love my JCM 900(a) 4x12. I had a mix of 75's and V30's in it for a while. Now it has 4 75's in it, but two of them are 25 year old 75's that came in my JCM 800 combo. They are well broken in and sound great to me.....last time I played a tube amp thru it anyhow.

Once I have a tube amp again, I may experiment with different speakers, but I don't hate the 75's at all. Different strokes for different folks.
