Your thoughts on the EH LPB-1.

I really don't need another boost pedal, but this seems to be an old "classic". Curious how it sounds, and I've had a "bay" gift card sitting around here forever, so it would essentially be free. Worth having in my stable, or pass?

Re: Your thoughts on the EH LPB-1.

You appear to have chosen a pedal based on its price equating to the value of your gift card. Would it not be wiser to put the card towards something that you actually need? The EHX Cock Fight is interesting. Pigbacon seems pretty keen on some of their overdrive and distortion pedals.

Re: Your thoughts on the EH LPB-1.

There's some truth to that, but also, I've just been curious as to what one of these sounds like. I could always get my money back out of it later on down the road. On the other hand, I'll check out the Cock Fight.

P.S. I'm still interested in what folks think of the LPB-1.

Me too! I am specifically interested in what anyone using moderately high-output humbuckers thinks of them, because most of the reviews I see are from people playing single-coil pickups. I don't need a pedal that makes a single-coil sound like a Super Distortion, I need something to make a Super Distortion sound better.

Re: Your thoughts on the EH LPB-1.

I borrowed one for a good bit of time, and two of my good buds use/have used them. It's definitely good, but it can be a bit dark in my experience. It's nice in that solos can be boosted and tame any piercing tone.

But, if you already have a boost/light overdrive you like, you're really not missing too much. It does it's job well and sounds good, but it's not something I find radically different than a lot of other options out there.

That's interesting because I thought the LPB-1 was EH's take on the old Dallas Rangemaster, which was a treble booster. (I think.) Am I confusing this pedal with something else?

I don't think it was a Rangemaster take, although you could simply use a smaller input cap (or a switch with a few various values) to get close.

Back in the early '70s (pre MV days) a few of us used them to boost the big ol' monster valve amps to get some rawk happening. They were great .... there were two versions back then ... they both had a solid jack plug sticking out of one end .... one variation plugged directly into the guitar, the other version plugged directly into the amp.

In those days, we would build simple one-transistor boosters, and early fuzz box designs, and we could see how simple the LPB was, but they used some weird transistor that we could never get hold of. I'm not totally sure, but pretty certain it was silicon, not germanium.

Yeah, they were great, in a nice simple way. Just boosted yer signal to make yer amp work harder. Nowdays, some amps may have more sensitive inputs and not respond well to too much boosting (talking about amps designed for higher gains, ugh), but i'm sure they still work great for most vintage-style amps, that's what they were designed for.

Like this ? This is a JEN Distortion Booster Circa 1971.

I have one and it works great. And as far add treble or bass or mids mine seems to boost all the same. I have the same tone just more volume on clean. It does give you more sustain on a distorted channel, but I also never run mine above 9 o'clock

Great info guys. I'm beginning to think that since I already have a (modded) Duncan SFX-01, perhaps my money would be better spent elsewhere.

Re: Your thoughts on the EH LPB-1.

No one's answered my question: how are they with good humbuckers? Most of the reviews and YouTube videos I can find seem to be single-coil players trying to boost up to the level my guitars already put out. (And no, I can't haul my gear to a local music store to try one out.)

In my experience with them, they're best with hot single coils or minibuckers. And it sounded great my bud's vintage Gretsch with the powertrons. There are other boosts I prefer with humbuckers like the Pigtronix Class A Boost and the DOD BiFet Boost.

But I'd say just go to a shop and try it. They're pretty easy to find. What I like might not be what you like.

Re: Your thoughts on the EH LPB-1.

I'm honored that Electroharmonix have chosen to name a pedal after me.

Little Pigbacon B?

Of what is the B an abbreviation? :p

Re: Your thoughts on the EH LPB-1.

Thank you, Dino Trousers. I will check one out, along with the DOD. (I like dod in general & didn't realize they made a boost.)
