Who, What, Where, When, Why.......

I've been going through my music library lately looking for inspiration. I was at the end, and of course i ran into ZZtop. I have been addicted to the Rythmeen and XXX album. The tones are very gutteral, I am obsessed with them. The rhythm tones are BALLSY, and the leads are smoooooth. Who are your ultimate tone merchants??

Who: ZZtop, Billy Gibbons

what were when} rhythmeen & XXX albums

Why? The tone is just mean/bad/from the gut

Anyone not familiar with these CD's check them out. Kind of modern dirty blues.

Conor Oberst
Fevers & Mirrors, 2001
it's just so... sad sounding... I love it. Plus that Vox tone on the electrics just shimmers through... it's amazing.

Re: Your ultimate tones. 5 W's

Dream Theater
A Change Of Seasons
All tracks except the title track.
I love in the solos when the guitar sounds like...well..."ah"

YES...I'm NOT THE ONLY ONE!!! I LOVE these records! Have you checked out mescalero? I love that one too! Thesse records make me want to just give it up...you just know that you could never write anything like that and if you did you still couldn't pull it off like they do! I would have agree with this one! Latly/All the time...I've also been in to lots of Jeff Beck, as for tones I would have to say all Jeff's tones are good (as are Billy G's) but letrly I've really been liking Guitar Shop as well as the JBG (the album w/ Ice cream cakes!). Right now these are the TONES...Rhythmeen, XXX and Mescalero are all 3 in my CD changer in the car as well as on my computer for listening to here as well!

I like Mescalero also, but XXX and rythmeen have damn near a meltdown tone to them. Sounds like the amps are screamin for mercy as the Rev. is squeezing every last bit of tone out of them. I love that effect he uses on LOADED. It sounds like the amp is in a starting to fry, or a chord is broken. I will have to check out the Beck tunes.

Re: Your ultimate tones. 5 W's

Oh ya, there is rumor that there is Bootleg footage of the Rev. and Jeff Beck Jamming at Eric claptons Crossroads event last year. I have google searched for it, but came up empty handed.

I looked everywhere to find that...no luck either!

LOADED is the "forbidded" setting on a Bixonic Expandora...it makes your guitar sound like that all the time, Billy calles it Explodeo Tone!!!

Lew said something, but deleated it...Lew, what did you have to say, I would love to hear your thoughts on the new ZZ trilogy!

Re: Your ultimate tones. 5 W's

Megadeth - Youthanasia

I just can't get over how edgy and HUGE the guitars sound on this record.

Re: Your ultimate tones. 5 W's

Who: John Christ from Danzig

what were when: s/t -88?

Why? That tone and style made me wanna play guitar and still does! IMO best metal guitarist ever!

Billy Gibbons - ZZ Top's First Album

Man I would kill to have his gear from that album in my possession. I would then lock myself away from theworld until I had every freakin' note down to the "T".

Billy rarely gets bad tone. I'll have to check XXX and Rhythmeen again, I didn't get too hopped on those discs. Mescalero rocks outright though.

You know, i was that way with them, kind of lukewarm. But then they grew, and grew on me. I would reccomend listening to them again, a few times. Passively, and actively listening to the guitar. The guitar on "pork chop sandwich", and "Loaded" are high points on either album respectively. When I sit and think that he is as old as my dad (the age that hendrix would be if he was alive) or even older, and then listen to the stuff he is stiff putting out, it blows my mind. Some of the big names seem to become a shadow of their former selves, or even trite or complacent in some aspects. I can't say this about Billy at all.

Re: Your ultimate tones. 5 W's

So many I can'y decide. Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Who. Over the years, the guitar tones that really jazzed me up were Alex Lifeson's on Rush's concept song "2112" and the guitars on Boston's tune "Don't Look Back". Those tones just scream electric guitar. :yell: :burnout:

Me too...well, kinds. I loved Rhythmeen right out of the gate...XXX took some time and Mescalreo just floored me...the tones, the songe, everything is still amazing to me...

Re: Your ultimate tones. 5 W's

Who - Stevie Ray Vaughan
What - Texas Flood
Where - Austin, Texas
When - 1983
Why - The rebirth of the blues by a Texas guitar prodigy with searing tone on a battered old '62 strat.

Re: Your ultimate tones. 5 W's

I love that Rhythmeen deep heavy tone that kicks you in the chest.
I think he was using a neckthru Tele into a really thick overdriven Marshall type of sound. The closest I get to that sound is with my PRS McCarty with a Custom 5 into a the Bogner Red channel, with the average gain, but widened out to the max.
I think it's E flat dropped low note, but it might be lower.

Re: Your ultimate tones. 5 W's

Who: Dream Theater
What, Where: IMAGES and WORDS
When: 1992
Why: Rhythm that pounds your chest in, tightness, aggression, yet sweetness w/ tons of clarity and dynamics. Leads that are so saturated and rounded it's just downright ricidulous. Very vocal like, sustain for days, and a certain natural, airy sound that just leaves you breathless. Think warm buttered rolls.
