Zakk wylde

Has anyone tried to install the eyehooks on their guitar a-la Zakk Wylde? I am thinking about trying it but thought it would be wise to find out what kind of trouble I would run into. BTW I would be doing it with a Dean Hardtail and am worried about the upper horn cracking. Any thoughts....

Re: Zakk wylde

A Dean? That's an awful nice axe to take a chance of screwing up.

The upper horn of a Les Paul Custom is flat and thich, which that of a hardtail is thin and rounded. I don't know if it would work.

Did you read about that in the new Guitar World, too? I saw it, but don't know if I'd want to do it. I hope it works if you try, though.

Peace.

Re: Zakk wylde

Thats the place exactly where I saw...it's also why I was wondering if anyone had tried anything like it on something with a horn. I would be quite upset with myself if I screwed up.

Re: Zakk wylde

Yes the strap locks work fine...but the eyebolts are just too cool. I will probably try this one out on a pawn shop cheap guitar first and see how it goes. If it works out then who knows....I think it is a great mod and no way you are ever gonna drop your guitar with those things.

Re: Zakk wylde

I think that's lame. Maybe it's just me, but I think that it is really distracting to the eye, and frankly dumb. I mean, if you are worried about losing your guitar, there are a lot of more aesthetically appealing alternatives. It's like Kevin Costner said in Bull Durham "when you make it to the majors you can put eye hooks on your guitar. People will think it adds character. Until then, it's just disgusting".

Re: Zakk wylde

ull get bored of the look eventually, and you will be left with a drilled out guitar thatwill be difficult to reverse back to the original strap buttons. In my opinion there are few guitars the Eye hooks work with. Like LPs, needs to be a rugged guitar in my opinion. A hardtail is too pretty!

Re: Zakk wylde

I would say don't do anything to your guitar... eye hooks might be cool... but hell, don't do anything you think you might regret!

Re: Zakk wylde

Well I have a friend who is wanting to do the same thing with his guitar so....I will try it on his first. If I like it then I suppose I will make up my mind afterward. But for the record I still think it is cool as lleh.

Re: Zakk wylde

Drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood.

Black Strat

I installed them awhile ago on my guitar because I wanted to use a chain for a strap. Then I found out Zakk did the same thing, so now I just use a plain leather one (which Zakk also does, but the eye screws are in there now, so there's not alot I can do about it. ).

Just keep in mind that the carabiners (sp?) will chew the hell out of the finish on your guitar. You are attaching a loose piece of metal that's going to hit, scrape, and bounce off everthing it can reach every time you move.

Personally, I like that feature, but if you love you're guitar, I wouldn't suggest this mod.

Re: Zakk wylde

You know I never even thought about the scratching issues this would cause. My friends guitar is pretty beat up so I guess we will stick it on his and I will go with the strap locks after all. Thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it.

Re: Zakk wylde

That's a great way to damage your guitar and make it look really stupid also. And then later on you're going to wonder, why the hell did I do such a stupid thing? Especially when you realize you won't be able to put regular strap buttons or strap locks ever again.....oops, all of a sudden your guitar is ridiculous AND has no resale value.

score another one for "looking cool" vs. practicality and as a replacement for regular practice.

if you want to make the guitar look extra dumb, make sure you sling it low between your knees too. Might be able to damage your wrist at the same time.

I'm not trying to be an arse, really, but some stuff just bugs me.

Re: Zakk wylde

didnt EVH do that too? at least on a couple of his guitars ive seen it done

EVH uses little eye screws and clips that are similar to those found on dog chains.

I don't buy guitars for their resale value. I buy them to play them.

Any mod that you do that makes you want to play it more is a good mod, even it it bugs other guitarists (or lowers the resale).

(Actually, the fact that it bugs other guitarists is a bonus to me, since I can be a jackass at times :) )

Re: Zakk wylde

Well, just to follow up...we did add the bolts to my friends guitar and he could not be happier. Actually when I showed up at his house he had the strap buttons off and the drill ready. I like the way it looks on his, but I have decided not to do it to the dean...I don't want to look like I'm copying him, although it was my idea to do it in the first place...but thanks for the input guys.
