Zero Fret – Thoughts?

I've never cared for them, due to my being old and naturally reliced.
As was already mentioned, back in the day only cheap guitars had them and they often caused as many problems as they were supposed to solve.

I would be very interested in trying a well-made guitar that has one though, as I can definitely see the benefit.

The zero fret is a great idea, but I'm pretty sure it isn't for me. It's an easy way to get the action at the first few frets as low as possible. It also fixes the inconsistent tone between fretted/open strings. Personally, though, I love the way open strings sound. I also really like the contrast when you add open strings into chords and leads. I'd rather have bone frets than a zero fret. I wouldn't want to know how much that would cost, or how you'd go about mounting them, though.

You can get all the low action on the nut just by working on the .... nut. + it is much easier/cheaper to waste a destroyed nut and start all over than a destroyed fret. + you can think of a floyd nut like a slotted, kind of weird shaped, zero fret.

I don't particularly like them mostly because in practice they haven't worked all that well for me.

Haven't got any 6 stringers with a zero fret but both my Sandberg basses have them and they play superb. Super low action, good tone and intonation.

I've had guitars with and without ZF and all I can tell about it, it never affected me any way. Perhaps I regarded the little differences as the part of the mojo, I don't know. Functionally it's just a metal-made nut like you can find on a Floyded guitar. There are 1000 other things that affect playability / feel more IMO.
