Zouk................

Re: Zouk................

looks like purple heart to me

yes thats right its Purple heart, and it is laid up in the laminations of the neck, with the other timbers.
I like laminated necks they are way stronger than single piece necks, and it lets you orient the grain for maximum strength,
and I reckon they look good..

Re: Zouk................

Does your purple heart and bloodwood generally oxidize and change color? I've seen some that does, and some that doesn't.

The stuff I have seems very stable,, that purple heart acoustic I built last year is still as bright as ever..
in fact the weird thing with the purple heart I have, is that when I open up a plank, its sort of reddish brownish not too good looking at all, and after about 4 hours it gets really purple..

so its a good thing.. gets more purple as it oxidises..

weird huh?

That's great! I find this stuff fascinating. There is a whole host of brightly colored woods that you don't see in guitar building a whole lot. I suppose it is much easier to dye maple.

Re: Zouk................

Wow that’s awesome love finding threads like this. Watching people with talent go through the process of building an instrument from scratch.

Re: Zouk................

Very beautiful instruments! That bouziki looks incredible and the accent woods are a beautiful touch!

Total noob question - in the photo where the Dragon inlay is set on the unfinished board, it appears to be totally uncut. How do you go about making room for the frets without ruining the perfect placement of that inlay? Do you just carefully cut out the spots where the fret slots are after gluing it in?

I'm so intrigued by this, my Chinese zodiac is calling to me...

yes..

the inlay is laid onto the board and scribed around, then the ebony is removed and the inlay is glued in.
I then radius the board, and recut the fret slots..carefully!!!..
then onto binding and frets..
