zvex nano idea

Alright, i dunno if this is gonna work so help me out all you techies.

I'm after a clean amp, and after a lot of reading, I've decided on a Fender DRRI. That said, i also want a cranked crunch distortion sorta sound.

I was deciding on the MI Audio Crunch box, then i came across this Zvex Nano Head. Most of you know about it already, but its a 1/2 watt head.

Can i say, use a amp selector, but put it between the fender and zvex 'heads' and then go to the speaker. So i share the speaker, but it lets me switch between two heads for a fender clean and the zvex distortion? Will that work somehow?

Re: zvex nano idea

Thank god you asked first. You would have blown up both amps when you steped on the switch. When you disconnect an amp from the speaker bad things happen. It might work if you had them wired up to a dummy cab with a resistor in it... But you can do alot better with a pedal, I wouldn't spend 500 bucks on a 1/2 watt head. Its nice, i tried it, but i dont think its a good idea.

Re: zvex nano idea

Well I don't think they'll blow up, but don't believe it's a good idea to have an amp on without a load. I'm sure someone a bit more learned in these things will hop in.

Re: zvex nano idea

while, if both amps were plugged into different speakers and you had a selector choosing which one the guitar was going to, it would work. I belive that angus young used a 100 watt marshall for cleans and a 50 for gain

Re: zvex nano idea

Apart from cooking one or both of your amps, you would have a hard time matching levels between the two. The Crunch Box into the DRRI will sound great. You could also put an MI Audio Blues Pro in there and have four gain options, Clean (pedals bypassed), Blues Pro, Crunch Box, Blues Pro + Crunch Box. The two pedals work brilliantly together, you could set up the Blues Pro for a mild overdrive, the Crunch Box for harder crunch, and the two together will give you a great sustaining lead tone, and you still wouldn't have spent half as much as the Nano. The Nano is mainly designed for recording.

In my opinion, the DRRI is not what I'd consider a "clean" amp. It does have some low volume cleans, but as you get to about 4 on the dial, the distortion begins and gets thicker and thicker the more you crank it.

Re: zvex nano idea

There is a tonebone pedal that lets you use two different head into one speaker and switch between them (using a dummy load for the non used head) as long as the ohmage is the same. Although i would use a distortion pedal instead of a separate amp. Also i would also look into amps that have a good clean and dirty (fender supersonic etc) if you need both sounds.

Re: zvex nano idea

Radial makes a pedal called a Tonebone Headbone, it canbe used to switch 2 heads (safelt) between one cab. Also, while some people only think about overdrive with a Deluxe reverb they have a gret clean sound and if you were going between a DRRI and a Nano head you'd have aplenty of clean with the DRRI even if you max out the Nano...thats actually a great idea for playing at home! Drop a Celestion G12H30 in the DRRI and get some good tubes for it then let it rip!

Re: zvex nano idea

I just tried the Deluxe Reverb in store. Wasn't what I'm looking for.
I played the Blues Junior next to it and it just had so much more mojo.
I'm just gonna stick a crunch box in front of the blues junior. That should be good right?

That will work fine. I am amazed someone would walk away from a DRRI and fall in love with a BJ, but hey it's your ears that matter not mine.

I agree with Christian. A DR has a great clean tone! I also agree with Scott that past 4 it starts to naturally break up. It doesn't get into what most perceive in there heads as distortion, but it does have that nice bluesy saturation and sing.
