Peavey 5150 users!

I'm still fine tuning the EQ on my 5150 II. So far bright on and crunch off, with the pre at 7 is working out pretty well.

Do you guys keep the bright and crunch switches on or off? And what kind of music do you play?

Re: Peavey 5150 users!

I totally forgot about the bright switch! I usually just plug in and play, I find that the amp is good at sounding like itself, and no matter how you turn the knobs, it sounds almost the same, as long as you use common sense of course. I only turn the knobs when we get to a new gig, as rooms sound different. I usually have it all pretty much in the noon pos... so if I go to a place that is bright, add more lows, then check the res.. if the place has a lot of wood, then boost the presence and the highs. I really love the amp. A lot of amps now a days, while great, need a lot of tweaking, and try to do too many things. The 5150s are not shy about what they are... mississippi marshalls.

Re: Peavey 5150 users!

I was under the impression that most if not all 5150 users use the red lead channel and keep the rhythm channel clean. Do some use it for dist. rhythm? Sounded too farty to me.

Re: Peavey 5150 users!

i set the bright and crunch switches on.... i set up the rythym channel to have a healthy grind to it and then use the 2nd channel set slightly more distorted and louder for solos

Re: Peavey 5150 users!

I use my rythem channel alot and have the gain around 7, has a real nice gritty/clean for blues and a nice Kill em All tone when crunch is on. I use the lead for more modern metal tones, but more for solos these days! I use the 5150II though... separate eqs and alot less gain on rythem channel. Gonna have FJA mods work on it in the future to get "more" of the amp out!

Maybe you should also get yourself some JJ electronics tubes. If you get a bias
mod added to it (which you should) consider an integrated quad of JJ 6L6GC's and E34L's.

Re: Peavey 5150 users!

I bought my 5150 II with JJ's in it. Its very very responsive to how strong you pick. My older solid state amp was always the same volume/sound regardless of how hard I picked. The 5150 II is very different I'm finding out

It'll take more than a bias mod for EL34s... You'll need one of the pins on the socket to be grounded I believe.

6L6 and KT66s will work though. I've been running GT 6L6GEs on the outside sockets and GT 6L6Rs on the inside sockets for almost a year, works for me.

The crunch channel really only works well for leads with single coils, or rhythm in my experience. Cleans get the job done. The bright switch kills the tone though.

The only actually useful EQ knobs on the 6505+ (5150II) IME are the resonance and presence controls. I usually leave my EQ at either 5 across the chart or 6. Maybe cut lows if the pickup is lowend heavy.

Re: Peavey 5150 users!

Yeah, I found the eq knobs on my block letter 5150 to be lacking. SO I tossed a 30 band eq in the loop. I don't go much off dead center for most ofthe bands, just tweak them a tiny bit to taste. I run through the lead channel with the pre gain on about 4 or so. Gives me a great VH crunch, with a bit more balls.

Well, typically if an amp runs 6L6's, it'll also run EL43's with very little to be done to the amp. I had a good friend of mine loan me his block 5150 head to try against my rack rig and I took the time to check the bias on it with my bias probe & multimeter. Wow, the bias was at a freezing 12mA per tube. Jay at Eurotubes.com told he that on the original 5150, the bias was preset (it's a fixed bias unit) ice cold and the amp was in crossover distortion. The only thing to do was to have a bias trim pot installed because even the hottest 6L6GC's they have won't pull the amp out of crossover distortion. My friend had it done and it was amazing! He had Eurotubes send him what they call, an integrated quad of 6L6's and E34L's if I'm not mistaking. Best 5150 I've ever heard and the clean channel was at least, usable now.

Of course, he's since sold the amp.:grumble:
